Mice and the Best Way to Deal With Them

When it gets a bit warmer, I am going to try the bucket method, too.

Cara, I looked at that trap on Amazon... and mostly it got great reviews, but the negatives on it were that the mice can learn to escape from it (don't ask me how!!!)... and once they do figure out that tidbit of survival, they just end up stealing the food out of it. They said it takes awhile for the mice to figure it out though, but once they do the trap is useless.

Now, it seems to me that if one empties the trap frequently, that should be a non issue. Not sure.

Other comments about these types of traps indicate that some mice have a preference for different types of openings. Some are not attracted to this trap at all - others have great luck with them.

None of the sparrow traps I looked at have the right size mesh for mice. My Grandpa made one when I was a child and it worked great for birds and mice

Any more ideas? Anyone have advice on how to build a multiple catch sparrow trap?

I see the cat issue too. I LOVE cats. We have two strictly indoor cats. But I don't want to encourage the feral cat problem here... I think it is a great idea for those who use it though.

We have cats getting dropped off here all the time. I have thought about bringing some into the pole barn. Not sure I am ready for that...

Snap traps are great, too... But I am not sure I could keep the birds out of them... It is a good idea though... maybe I can try that.

What would really be nice is to find some plans for a sparrow trap that I could redesign just a bit to make it into a mouse trap. I think the mice will be more drawn to it when other mice are inside, too.

Any thoughts?

This is a good posting. Not only will you kill lots of mice with this, but you can cut your feed bill too. Just dump the dead mice in the run and the chooks will soon eat them.

I know that a live or dead mouse would not last long around my flock. You shoud see a sweet potato disappear out there!

I used the snap trap in my coop. I put it on a 2x4 that was part of the frame next to the nest boxes to help guard the trap, and put a piece of plywood against it so that the hens couldn't get into it. I caught a mouse a day for about a week then haven't gotten any for over a week. I think I caught all of the little buggers. It's still set and the chickens don't even know it's there still.

I'll let you borrow my Buff Orp hen Hilde...she is the best mouser ever! Funny as all get out to see her running around with a mouse tail sticking out of her beak. Aside from her, I use standard wood and metal traps with peanut butter and a piece of a nut stuck in the metal curl. My varmints seem to like pecan pieces best. Good Luck!

I have seen these at Fleet Farm, Lowe's, True Value, Ace Hardward, and Menards too. If I had a big problem with mice, this is what I'd use. I holds about 30 mice at a time and is small. They are not too expencive either. $10-$20.

You can drown them, it has little holes in the sides I think for that purpose.

You could also put mouse bait inside, that way you don't have to worry about anything eating the poisoned dead mice.
