Mice eating my grain at night!!!

I had sparrows and mice eating most of my chicken feed. I agree with the others that having a repeating mouse trap is essential. ChickensAreSweet recommended to me an awesome trap (Ketch-all) that is even made in US (IA)! It works fantastically well. Thanks CAS! I also made a treadle feeder. You can find plans to make one rather inexpensively here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=56638-building-a-treadle-feeder

Get a young cat, preferrably a female. Get her fixed and introduce her to the flock.
(If you fix a young male, they end up not being very aggressive hunters)

Our two females coexist with our flock, chicks included, and we have never seen shrews (Alaska, no mice) on our property.

I've putting glue traps and repeating traps under a crate where they spill most of their food during the day so when the mice come around I can catch at least 3-4 a night. I am starting to put the food away at night as well since they do not eat at night anyhow. That also helps to keep the waste down, since they are really ready to eat when I put the food out in the late morning and don't leave too much for the other critters.

You can also use a poison called Just One Bite (bromadiolone.) Of course it must be put out so the chickens can't get at it. What is so useful about it is, no animal that eats the dead rat will be poisoned.
