Mice...help!

Make a bucket trap. I use it, and it works great. Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full with water, and cover the water surface with sunflower seeds. Provide them an access ramp. They jump in thinking they've found a great treat and drown. Then you simply dispose of them (I burn the nasty critters). No poison, no snap traps, you don't even have to touch them, and you can reuse it. I set mine at night, since that's when I seem to have a problem with them (mice that brave the run in the sunlight get eaten). Then I remove it in the morning so my chickens aren't tempted to jump in as well. Set it every night until it stops catching mice. Good luck!

What a smart idea! I've used the metal zappers, and haven't had a problem with batteries being used. Pretty much 30-50 times before they need to be changed out. And since I startd using recharables years ago, this isn't a bad thing. I put them out at night right outside the coop and bait them with peanut butter. Since research is my "thing" I've learned that rats will stay on the same trail for a lifetime, sometimes up to 2 miles if they have a predictable access to water and food. Oddly, since using these traps, I haven't seen the creepy gray foxes with terrible attitudes, and I haven't seen any signs of our normal owl activity. Or skunks. Think I will try a few buckets just to see what happens. Thank you!

I posted a topic on this very subject just a few days ago, but...

The little cylinder on the wire spins. Smear a little peanut butter or grease on it. Fill the bucket with water. The mouse/rat tries to get at the bait, falls in and drowns.

Well I do think the snap traps are the best, but that is just IMO. I have used the glue and that is mean. You gotta drowned the little guys anyway.Snaps rule but are gross to clean. The bucket method is easy and economical.

I think ANY method to kill a mouse or rat is a good idea! I do not agree with catching them and driving them somewhere to release them. It kind of makes Your problem someone Else's problem! And spreads rodents and their diseases far and wide. Please stop doing that! Would you want someone to dump off rodents near your house?

Sorry didnt mean to double post....I cant figure out how to delete one????

We have only had intermittent rat problems. I'm more of a lover than a fighter, so we borrowed a ordinary live trap and used it as a template to build our own. I have relocated all our periodic rodent guests with great success. I just have to keep putting it out until they are all caught and make sure to drive them out several miles for release. Leather gloves and an old ax handle let me handle the trap with no fear of catching rat cooties.
