Mice in the House, not in the coop...

Some snap-trap tips:
-Cram a piece of crunchy pnut butter into trigger, better yet (and less messy) a sunflower seed.

I keep traps out 24/7 and check them while doing my morning rounds. Here lately I've been finding the peanut butter eaten off some traps without them being triggered. I thought about you saying to cram a sunflower seed in the bait cup and that really did the trick, thanks for the tip!

My cats are the best mouse catchers. Sometimes they bring in live ones as presents. One dropped a live mouse on our bed last week.

We’ve used snap traps inside with great success. Until we redid our foundation, we knew there was a mouse superhighway thru the house and could count on them arriving as it got colder. We’ve fixed that problem now and the only live ones we see in the house are the ones the cats bring in.

Before we fixed things, we also used a deep open waste basket under a cabinet where we knew they would be. We’d put peanut butter at the bottom. They’d get in and couldn’t get out.

I had nice the first year I had the house. I watched my cat sit on top of the fridge, tail twitching watch the mouse run across the kitchen. I have way to many animals to put down poison or live traps, so I used peppermint and it worked. Well it worked until I found that one of my dogs had an allergy to peppermint. No problems for a few years, but I do believe I have found mouse poop in the kitchen, so bsck to the peppermint and kerping an eye on the dog.

We had a pest control company come out and the main thing they were able to do was figure out how the mice were getting in and fixing it. The mice that were inside we caught and dispatched with an electric trap.

I'm doing the deep litter method, I have mice pretty bad! I think when the girls go out to play in the snow in the morning, I'm going to take my three cats out there and just lock them in it for a while. See if that helps.
Any advice?

I miss having a barn cat, they really do help with 'mouse patrol'.

Totally agree. The first year we lived here (old, drafty farmhouse with mouse access everywhere), we had HORRIBLE mouse problems. The next year, a stray adopted us. She is a petite little thing. Doesn't weigh more than 5 lbs. She is a champion hunter. We keep her as an outdoor farm cat. We've only had the occasional mouse issue since and she even caught a HUGE rat that was living in my parents' garage (they live next door) that was 1/3rd her size.

I'm looking for a cat like her! Nobody has turned up in over a year, sadly.

We'd like to get a couple more like her (on the premise that 2 is 1 and 1 is None) but she is highly territorial. She has chased my parents' indoor/outdoor cat (who is twice her size and almost as good as a hunter) away several times. Fortunately, she isn't always on guard.
