MICHIGAN Chickenstock North - 2012 August or September

Ok, so heres an update (for what it's worth)
I just got off the phone with the township supervisor and he told me that he hadnt had a chance to speak with the park manager since he came back from vacation. He says he is suposed to meet with him tomorow and as soon as he speaks with him then he will call me.

Well, eventually we should have a definite maybe, someday!!!

Well, I guess local governments aren't as poor as we thought. If they were facing budget constraints, you would think they'd jump for joy when someone wanted to pay to reserve a pavillion

True, but in this case, there is no money to be made. There is no charge for the pavilion. Also, there is no reservation (first come first serve). The big hold-up is simply making sure that birds are welcome. So far, everybody including the Twp. Super., is totally for it. I just need the Super to talk it over with the park manager.
This is simply the wonderful world of N. Michigan. EVERYTHING moves slowly up here. One reason we can spot tourists so easily, They move a little quicker, lol! I know we are going to get the "ok" with this, it's just kinda a formality. What has me climbing the walls is that there is that slim chance that they could say no (I really dont think they are going to). If that happens, then I really don't know if we are going to be able to do this in Grayling. I have talked to a load of places between West Branch and Gaylord and nobody wants birds in their park. Cripe! It's northern Michigan! Not Buckinham Palaces front lawn! Oh well, it is what it is..... If worst comes to worst I have a couple of ideas. One of which is on the outskirts of Grayling. It's a little off the beaten path, but it's easy to get to. I'm friends with the Twp. Treasurer and there is a campground right down the road. Campground is rustic but clean and it's on an excellent fishing lake.

Would anyone have an objection to doing this about 10 miles East of Grayling (if it comes down to it)?
Nice roomy pavilion, excellent playground, and I know we would be welcome with our birds. I would be really surprised if they charge for their pavilion too. Just a thought. Let me know.

I would have no problem with that place if the one you're trying for falls though. I'm pretty easy.

Great! Well, at least I know if we have to go with plan B, I won't be sitting there all by myself, lol! I can't immagine that they will say no about the first place. I just like to have a backup plan

You know, since I started thinking about doing this, I have been half heartedly thinking 'well, maybe we could have it at the Twp. Park in Lovells' (that is he place that would be plan B. I can see some pro's and con't to both places. The biggest pro to the second place is that there is a really nice campground just down the road from the Twp. I am still having trouble finding somewhere near the place in grayling for everyone to stay at. Most of what I am finding is rustic (I mean REALLY rustic, lol). I also know the director of the campground in Lovells and I know that if anyone gave us a hard time about the birds there, I could call her and get things straightened out. Not that I am expecting a problem, but I always plan for the worst so that if only a few things go wrong, then I can say "well, at least _____ didnt happen" Lol!

Some other fantastic features of Lovells.....

*Some of the most wonderfully friendly and welcoming locals you have ever met.
*AWESOME fishing opportunities. North Branch of the AuSable (fly fishing only) is right there, also Shupac lake is where the campground is and that is a really good trout lake with some of the biggest bluegill and rockbass I have ever seen. Also, fantastic bird watching and there are a couple of families of loons that nest there :) :).
*For those who are not the camping types, there is lodging right near there and the price is VERY reasonable.
*For those who are not all that big on cooking over a campfire, Lovells tavern has some of the best food there is.
*Lots of super fun two-tracks to explore.

I have been vacationing in Lovells my entire life (usually a month at a time). This is a really neat town with some really neat people. Something that I really enjoy about the place is the sense of humor. As an example, every year they have "The Lovells Bridge Walk". This was inspired by the Mackinaw Bridge Walk. The big difference is that the Lovells bridge is only big enough to span the North Branch of the AuSable (Maybe 50 feet at best). Now this bridge walk has turned into a HUGE event over the last 20 some years. It's just one of those things that's kinda silly and fun, but now it's one of those things that people come from all over for. Now, here is what I am thinking.... If we went with Lovells as our gathering place, who knows, could turn into a Bridge Walk kinda thing. Sure would be cool to know we would have a guaranteed venue every year, not to mention be able to have a small town behind us, lol. Crawford county (where Grayling and Lovells are) no longer has a county fair. Maybe something like this could spread the good word about chickens to a whole new group of people. I realize that I am kinda putting the cart before the horse, but if we have this first gathering at the right place, there could be infinite possibilities for where this could go.

Also, as far as camping goes, if anybody wants to camp but doesnt have the gear for it (tents, cookware, etc, etc,), let me know. I have lots of extras that I would not mind sharing :).

Any input that anyone has on the Lovells idea, please let me know. It might just be a better idea than Grayling.

I feel if you are willing to find the place, and have done the research about the chickens being there, then either place would be fine. That's just the way I feel about it. And I get a kick out of people saying its "up north". It's "down state" for alot of us northerners

Hope it'll all work out for a great northern chickenstock.

ya know if you still haven't found a place or a date, My brother owns a campground in New Era, Stoney Lake camp ground, they have a nice pavilion, no walls just an over head. They allow no alcohol. If you have a date in mind I can call him, I am sure he wouldn't have a problem with chickens. nice play ground and baths, wouldn't have to move chickens to and from a different location
