MICHIGAN Chickenstock North - 2012 August or September

Someone mentioned Houghton Lake once didn't they? Or am I getting confused? That's further north, west of west Branch which has also been mentioned. Does anybody know about that area?

As you can see picking a location isn't easy. Two or three folks need to decide when and where as it will be winter at this rate.

I went back thru this thread and did not see any mention of Houghton Lake. Perhaps it was elsewhere??

How about this.

Everybody is throwing out locations, but the amenities are not being listed, nor the potential availability of each. Posting pictures allowing everyone to see what it is like, might help make a decision.

If anyone wants to provide a potential location with amenities both in the park and the area, please post no later than Friday, July 6, 10 pm.

Everyone can post their choice no later than noon Sunday, July 8. The chosen location can then be checked for availability. Note, if you are willing to post a location, you should be willing and able to reserve the location as well.

If the first choice is not available, the successive choices will be checked for availability.

Date _ How about Saturday, September 22? Let's make it a date.

And keep in mind that this is being geared towards a NORTHERN location.

Looking forward to what options you come up with.

I am submitting the Brethren location as posted previously on page 3 of this thread.

I like a get together in Brethern, MI that is close to me in Manistee and nothing fun ever goes down near me

I can see if there is anywhere near Manistee if anyone would be interested. As for dates I'm open for almost the entire fall.

Since no one who mentioned west branch is providing any data and it's too far away from me (as is Grayling) to get photos, etc, I'll be posting info on my park here in Barton City, in the next couple of days. I know a pavilion costs $25, there are 2, one within a chain link fence and one without out. There is also a cookshack rentable for another $25 but I doubt we'd need that if someone supplies a grill. I'm pretty sure there aren't any built in grills there.

There is also a play area with a swing set and some sort of climbing apparatus. I'll get photos. A baseball diamond and a basketball court. BC is just north of M-72 between M-65 and US23. To come home from downstate I usually take I75 to US23 to M-65. It is next to the Jewell Lake Campground at the top of the Huron Nat'l Forest. It's an all sport lake within walking distance from the park.

I live in Brethren. It is a small town. So small there is not even a stop light, and only one school that covers three different townships from Pre-K thru high school. It is between Manistee and Cadillac in North West Michigan.

However, there is a wooded park with a pavilion and playground, and a lake across the street with access just a block away. Tippy Dam is just a few miles away and provides great fishing. There are campgrounds and cabins available for rent, and availability at this time of year is wonderful since they primarily cater to hunters.

If anyone is interested in coming to Brethren, let me know. There is no problem in getting to use the park here. The Grayling location was chosen as a first choice because it is central in the state, much like Lansing is on the southern part of the state. I, for one, would like to get together with other members on this site, no matter how many. Sometimes smaller groups are nice. You get to talk to everyone. There are plenty of us in the northern part of the state who simply find the distance to go to Lansing impossible. Some people from the south may still want to come. Everyone is welcome. Make a weekend of it!

If we want to get together, LET'S GET TOGETHER!!! People went to Raz's house and had a great time. It didn't take a lot of planning or scheduling. It was simply said, "Let's meet," and it happened. We can do the same up here.
Will you let meknow that is required to get a campsite near Brethern? We have a 26 foot travel trailer that doesn't get any use lately. If I can persuade Jo to go with me we'll be there. IF not, I just might go alone. Lemee know? bob

This place sounds great to me because its only a little over an hour from here. I'm north of this yet. Every place else is still around 3 or more hours from me. If anyone lives in the upper that would like to come, it'll still be a few hours for them. But closer then the other ones. Here I go rambling along again

Absolutely. There are places to camp and campgrounds both here and in the little neighboring town of Kaleva.

Here are a couple photos of the park in Barton City. The park is in the center of the village. The general store and gas station, bar, and restaurant are across the street.

There are rest rooms as well.

There is a water pump outside the open air pavilion. The other pavilion was fenced to enable the village to use it as a beer tent. Both have electricity. the unfenced one is right by the road, the fenced one further back. All those people in the background of the play area are in the annual horseshoe tournament.
