Michigan Hatchers! What'cha got cookin?

Hi everyone, i have been gone since friday.. had a great weekend downstate..

Instead of doing the float test.. if your on day 24 0r 25, I poke a tiny whole in the top of the egg into the aircell and listen. see if you hear them cheeping in there.. .. make sure you have warm water and warm wet paper towel on hand.. then proceed.. you can usually tell if its dis, because by then they are usually going to need help.. watch for veining in the membraine, if there is viening, put warm slightly damp paper towel over and put back in incubator, and check later.. your waiting for egg sac to obsorb.. all this happens because of not having steady temps.. and the more hatches you do the more you learn and get better at it.. its all a learning curve..

my first time i ever used the incubator i went into the 25 day.. 2nds time to day 24.. now most eggs are hatched that are going to by day 23.. but i find the more hatches you do, and get to know your incubator, you will know..

Congrats on all the hatches.. I am on day 9.. temps holding steady and humidity is staying 21-25.. and i havent added a drop of water. more humidity in the air then usual..last hatch humidity stay close to 16 most of the time.

@glad do you think your hens may be getting broody, or did they get spooked.. how many eggs did you get today..

@aart you did the right thing culling the chick.. I had to cull one on my first batch this yr.. was hard.. i tried the gasing didnt work. then it was sub zero outside, i put him outside next thing you know i keep hearing him chirping out loud and didnt get quieter seemed to be getting louder, there goes my heartstrings, i went out and got him, finally i just cut its head off.. was the only way.. if i waited any longer that little baby would still be alive. for me you get in a certain mindset.. do it, and done.. if i have to ever think about it i would never be able to do it.
Thanks, yes, that's what I did. Was hard, but glad it didn't suffer any longer.

I really like how friendly and calm they are. They came from different farms. The one breeder said her Jubilees are her friendliest. They lay excellent too. Big eggs.

I got 3 eggs today. Nothing has spooked them tht I know of. I did just do a full coop clean out but they were already laying poorly at that point so I don't think that was it either. I caught a few yesterday and checked for lice and mites and didn't really see anything. We've had lice before so I knew what I was looking for too. ;) I'm going through 50# of feed a week so it would be nice if I had some eggs to sell To help cover that.

OMG, got home from work to 2 pips! One is facing down, will that be ok, should I worry they are facing towards the bottom of the incubator? the other is just a crack in the shell facing up. The one facing down has the beak tip out

Both are Iowa Blues! First pips of the group on day 20.

I heard Iowa's hatch earlier than other chickens from the Iowa Blue experts....so excited!!!!
