Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi Jake! How did I miss someone who lives in Mikado? I MUST have seen you on here before, my memory is just not what it used to be. I'm over here in Barton City. "Howdy neighbor!"

I've changed my profile pic, whatcha think? He's my dominant roo Blue Andalusian. The naughty boy blind sided me last week and got his spur right through my pant leg, above my boots and left a 1.5" cut. I chased him around and he hasn't done it since. He's lucky he's my only blue and destined to be bred rather than eaten.... this year.

If your trench is 2' wide I would put the hardware cloth down and then over the 2'. With weasels you are going to want to check out your coop as well, very carefully, covering any gaps with hardware cloth. Its worth the extra effort not having to worry what predators are visiting during the night and having a safe place for them during the day if needed.

I know I am going to be totally obsessed with this! My DH doesn't help.. He keeps saying Frank Zappas song Weasels Ripped my flesh

I have decided since someone else (sorry don't know all the names yet) used re purposed wood I will as well. The first piece of property we had they started to build a house. The house was supposed to be shaped like an L and the small part of the L they had built to where they could live in it. So I think that may be 18x12 maybe? So HOPEFULLY with the help of my kids I can get that torn down and rebuild it on the front property. Hopefully the township doesn't say to much since I will just be moving it from one spot to another. I am going to start investing in hardware cloth now :) Can this also be used as a fencing for around my property as well or should I just get the 2x4 goat fencing for my property?

Sorry mylobell about your chicks..

Hope no one is offended by this. DH sent it to me and I thought it was pretty funny. Then I asked where is my wine?

so adorable
Hi mylobell, sorry about your chickens.

welcome to the group. I'm a bit further north than you, about a 90 minute drive up M-65, between Lincoln and Glennie. I'd say Barton City, but no one knows where the heck that is!
Fun bunch here.
hi swampducks,. i am in oscoda.. nice to see someone that lives closer on here.
Alma MI chicken show this sat, the 4th, who is going?

This will be my first time, going to pick up some more Icelandics and some Delawares.

And spending a lot of time looking at other breeds.

Its a 3hr drive but I expect that its going to be well worth it.

Re introducing young chickens to the flock, I would never even try before they were 3-4 mos old and then only if they had lots of places to hide. Six mos would be even better, in a large space.
Hi Jake, i live in oscoda.. we are almost neighbors.. nice to see someone that lives closer on here

I'll be there and so will Theron :)

Updating for those that were interested in our meat bird pens. I found a nice wheel setup in the coops sub forum and used that the tractors. Basically, we took the 2x4, put a nut between the wheel and the board (with a long, appropriate diameter bolt) and attached the wheel to the bottom of the board. The center bolt allows the board/wheel to rotate 360 degrees. I can "lock" the wheel straight up (like the picture) by inserting the bottom bolt in a pre-drilled hole in the 2x4 that is part of the frame of the tractor. If I want to engage the wheels, I remove that bolt, rotate the board until it's straight the other way (wheel on the ground) and put the bolt back in. There is a hole drilled in the frame piece tractor to hold it in THAT position. (There are 2 holes in the frame to insert the bolt to lock the wheel in either the "up" or "engaged" position. One is high, and one is low)
That seems like a crappy explanation. If you don't understand, let me know and I'll grab a few more pictures.
