Stop worrying.

Putting the chicks with the others could cause pecking if there is a big age difference.

I would candle the eggs you have left under the hen. Pull any bad eggs and put food and water out for the little chicks to eat.. They'll hang out with mom till she gets up. If she is sitting excessivly long, take the remaining eggs and boot her out of what you have her in so she can start being a mom.

One time I had a hen on a bunch of eggs.. so I put her/eggs/and the chicks in a kiddy pool w/light so she could see them, but they weren't getting smooshed and were able to eat/drink and stay warm..she could see/hear them. Once most of the eggs hatched, I pulled the eggs, and she started to take care of them.
Silly help me. I locked my incubator down this morning and I hear peeping already now what do I do, I am nervous.

Put my youngest chicks outside for some fresh air today. They seem to be having a blast. I'll have to bring them in tonight though because it's still too chilly at night for those that aren't completely feathered yet. Two of them are particularly slow feathering.

And I just wanted to say, my hens are embarrassingly loud now that our rooster isn't here. Their "egg song" echos all over the neighborhood ALL morning long. They didn't used to do that. Maybe one would bak-awk a few times but this is insane. Our rooster would crow several times a day but 11 hens doing the egg song 8am -1pm... OY!

I love the egg song! I love all animal sounds except a bear grunting right next to my tent,

I've been gone for a while, and just caught up.
Raz, I hope media coverage helps your cause.

We have our 2 month old silkies and d'uccles with our 3 week week old cochin chicks in a divided brooder. The chicks sneak under the divider to snuggle and eat. At this point, one of the silkies have adopted the cochins. She's herding them, and stands over them, and gathers them under her wings. Babies having babies, I tell you.

Loving this weather. We have been busy cleaning up outside and building the Coop Magnifique! LOL DH is a bit of a perfectionist, even when we are using scrap wood and craigslist materials! It's going to be awesome when it's done though. The floor is getting tiled today and the roof should be finished as well. We still need to find some windows. Total size 5x8, 6ft height so we can walk in. Planning on nesting boxes out the front with windows above the boxes and on the oposite wall. Pop door out the back will lead to kennel paneled run. I see a whole lot of hardware cloth in my future!

The big question is to paint the inside or leave it bare wood. I am leaning towards white inside for lightness and easier cleaning. Thoughts?

I've been super busy the last few days. Moved plywood, emptied our old house of shelving and cupboards, raked, transplanted and finished up my little coop.

I did what they tell you not to and have it on the ground, but it is for my little birds that have a hard time with ramps. Right now it is in the front yard, I built it there because it was close to the tools and planned on moving it when it was done. My sister borrowed the trailer so now it is still in the front yard. We'll see how long it takes to be moved.

The garden is tilled and ready to be planted and our leaves are started so as long as it seems it took spring to get here it really is pretty much on track for a normal season.

Nice. I would paint it. Would last longer depending on what kind of materials you use. Our coop is slow-going. My husband is working on it after work, setting pavers in the ground level, square and all that... and it's gotten almost nowhere - maybe one or two pavers a day. Maybe by winter we'll have a new coop...

or maybe I should just go out there and do it myself (he wanted a project and I let him have it, been good about not getting in the way or nagging).

If you have the time and inclination to paint it, I would do so. I want to paint the inside of ours when we do our spring clean-out and change all the litter out. It's supposed to not only protect the wood, etc, it's supposed to help prevent mites from having places to hide. I would just buy oops paint at one of the box stores. $5/gallon for it usually, and you can get some fun colors! If you haven't considered it yet in your planning, think about where the sun comes through when locating your window, and which direction the wind usually comes from in the winter for your pop door. We goofed and put the door in the wrong spot on our coop....on the west wall and we get a west or north-west wind all winter long.

I wonder if I have another pullet going broody, or if she's just getting ready to lay. I keep finding her in the favored laying corner, and she gets really loud when I kick her off the nest. Have requests for 13 doz eggs this week. And of course, laying has slowed down to 6 or 7 eggs/day instead of the 10-11/day that I was getting. I'm finding a lot of feathers in the coop so I'm wondering if they're getting ready to moult.....

love those little fuzzy birds.

ours have been VERY NOISY the last couple of days.
yesterday we got 22 eggs from 24 hens, many of them 5yrs old, Haven't gotten that many eggs in a long time.
I read an article 1muttsfan, posted, don't remember what it was for but they stated CAYENNE PEPPER good for worming and cocci, give heavily for 5 days in food or water,,,,, thought what the heck I haven't wormed this spring and really diddn't want to as they were laying pretty good(10-16 a day) then I had some runny butts from tainted scratch so I gave vitamins. No soft or rubber shells yesterday either.

Remember if you paint to watch for pealing so hens don't peck at paint...it should be easier to clean though, and will look real nice.
