Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Chicks can and will go through a chain link fence and then get eaten by predators. Do you have cats? How about using a ramp?
No cats, and I don't think any of the neighbors really have any either.....at least we never see any. I'm sure there's a feral cat or 2 in the area.

I could probably put a ramp on, but we didn't locate our pop door very well, so we keep a piece of OSB leaned against the coop to protect the opening from wind. I'd probably have to take that off if I put a ramp on. I did let them out of the crate yesterday, and they all had a good time exploring the coop, and the other hens left all of the chicks alone. To add more issues, I didn't think about them needing chick food or at least flock raiser, and just bought 100# of layer. *sigh* I'm either going to have to pen mama and chicks up separately or just take the chicks away I think.

Morning, all!

I want a young Rhode Island Red or Leghorn rooster to govern my growing flock of pullets of the same kind (plus a few red New Hampshires). Is anyone going to have one to bring to chickenstock? That would be more than awesome!!!

I've been super busy the last few days. Moved plywood, emptied our old house of shelving and cupboards, raked, transplanted and finished up my little coop.

I did what they tell you not to and have it on the ground, but it is for my little birds that have a hard time with ramps. Right now it is in the front yard, I built it there because it was close to the tools and planned on moving it when it was done. My sister borrowed the trailer so now it is still in the front yard. We'll see how long it takes to be moved.

The garden is tilled and ready to be planted and our leaves are started so as long as it seems it took spring to get here it really is pretty much on track for a normal season.
Did your son help with a school fund raiser for a dog named peanut?

I have a bunch of RIR roos that will be going to market soon... I could pick out the nicest one and bring him to CS or we could make arrangements if you're not too far away..............which it looks like you are......... Let me know if you're want one....... I can send a pict of what I have. and bring to CS if you're really going to come.

Hello All, First time here! I am a "new" chickeneer and thought a little help from fellow Michiganders would be helpful!

A little about me, I am married to my HS sweetheart and we have our Daughter (Riley) who will be 6 next month... the chickens were her and Daddies idea, and since I was very unsure about this, they went and bought 6 different kinds on a whim. We just built our coop last weekend, but have yet to get the chicks in there since we are trying to figure out the best way to put the fencing up. I would love to just have free range but we have a yellow lab who just seems TOO interested in the newest addition to our house.

Hoping to learn a few helpful tips in the wonderful world of Chickening :)

Thanks! SO here is my first list of questions!! Be prepared, I am a country girl but grew up "in town" even if the town was barely called a village

1. What are the requirements to putting our chicks outside? Right now, they are currently in the house in a large tote and my "big" boys keep flying and perching on the ledge, which in turn creates a very upset mommy with all the poop on my carpet!

2. How many nesting boxes do you need, and when do they start laying eggs? We built a quick coop, it's small but will plans of adding on a nesting box, but it will get us by JUST to get them out of the house for now.

3. Right now their food/water dishes are in the tote (obviously) but when we FINALLY move them outside, I am assuming we put it in the Run area, but how do you keep them from getting their water dishes all dirty?

4. What is the BEST type of fencing to have for the run area? We had a small roll of chain link fence given to us (and since the coop was built with ALL pieces of scrap wood, this has virtually been free of charge to us! BIG PLUS) but not sure how we are going to put that up, but also want to make sure we have the right type of fencing.

5. Does the run area HAVE to have wire on the top of it?

OK OK OK that's all I can think of right now, plus I should get a little bit of work done since I don't think the boss man would like to be paying me for asking questions about chickens!!
