Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Learn something new and different every day.. Maah, I like your food and water set up!! how does it fair in winter for the water??

Last night, when I tried to mow the lawn..... Cas (goat) hopped on the mower, and made himself at home in my lap! Silly goat! He stayed there whole time I mowed... ok, I know not the safest thing to do, but it was better than having him trying to follow me around.

Have you tried giving him local honey? It is a popular home remedy that many folk believe help with allergies.
I know of 2 scientific studies on it. One was inconclusive and the other showed improvement but statistical results weren't very good (p was very high. Science nerds will get it).
A spoonful of honey seems to help keep my allergies in check.

This may be fine for mild allergies, but for someone like him that has severe allergies, he will end up in the hospital. I tried some local honey last year and he puffs up from it and has bloody diarrhea for several days - bleh. The regular honey from Meijer seems to be fine at least... We have an appointment in July for him to get retested and start getting allergy shots. The nuts, sunflowers, tomatoes, oranges etc. he has I can deal with but the pollen allergies really suck.

Over the winter DH drained the blue barrel and we have an 8 gallon galvanized waterer on a heater base inside the coop. I'm glad we got the biggest one we could find, but I would like to come up with something better for next winter. Hauling water out in the cold... bleh!! The feeder continued to do fine. Only problem was once in a great while if we had an icy day the cap on the pvc would stick, but was no biggie.

That is SO FUNNY that your goat decided to play lap puppy while you mowed! I can't imagine our goats doing that. Well... mostly cuz I can't imagine all our goats fitting on our lap at the same time, and they don't do anything by themselves. LOL. We do have a barn kitty that loves to do that type of stuff. Always hitching rides on the golf cart, hood of the truck, shoulders, tractor.... etc.

Ginger! Where abouts do you reside?? Oh gosh, the chickens love, love, love worms and grubs. Some of my hens don't eat worms but never, never pass on grubs!! Even find an occasional frog to eat, too! lol What does the co worker think they eat when they're scratching in the garden??
I live In Central Michigan (Near Mt Pleasant/Alma)

SOOOOO happy to hear that they are ok to eat the worms, she was amazed that they gobbled the grubs up, but it was kinda funny to watch them pull the worms from the others' mouths, and we died laughing when Tank (one of our big boys- really need to know what he is) got one tossed on his back and 2 of the other went crazy trying to get them and he just kept a running and chirping..... I will take a picture of them when I get home....

Hahaha! One of our girls got a worm stuck on her back once and a couple of them chased her. Chickens are so entertaining to watch. Every time my daughter finds any sort of bug or worm she's giving it to the chickens. She also goes and steals a handful of birdseed from the front yard feeders and takes it out back to the chickens. One day I discovered her tossing little pieces of ham sandwich out the living room window to them! She's only 2 so she sees all of the animals as her best friends. She doesn't understand why the chickens never come when she calls like the dogs do. Lol

Welcome to the new members!

Ginger, if you check out the link in my siggy line you can see my hoop run. Super easy to build and it's covered too. We even put plastic on it in the winter so the chickens did not have to go out in the snow.

Hey Nova, what color are Salmon Favarolles supposed to be when they hatch? I had 3 hatch out and 2 are black and one is yellow??
fuzzy light yellow. No other color at hatch. Then you should start seeing color in the wings when they start growing. That's the first place you should see color. Girls will get it in the wings, and boys will start getting it in the wings and shoulders. The boys will freak you out at how fast they change color too.
