Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Sorry to hear about your dog problem. I lost my ENTIRE flock to a stray dog last year. I got this chickens young, dotted over them & was ecstatic when I finally got my first egg. I came home for lunch one day & the dog was still inside my pen. It killed all of them and one rabbit. I found all the animals buried all over the chicken pen. I was devastated to say the least. As cruel as it sounds, the dog will never harm and other animals. I never did find out whose dog it was. I truly understand your pain and frustration.

kingI've never ceased to be amazed by how storms travel. David lives just 6 miles north of me and quite often he will have rain and we won't or the reverse happens. I remember a hot summer day at Fort Leonard Wood when we were baking in the hot sun and on the other side of the road it was dark and raining hard enough to strangle a frog.

The rain we are getting now will sure benefit my garden. I think it is almost impossible to water as effectively as a good soaking rain. You can almost immediately see a difference in the plants. They seem much greener and to stand a little taller. With most of the competing weeds gone I expect to see a noticeable difference by the weekend. Perhaps the tomatoes will have grown enough that I can start attaching them to the ropes going to the overhead support system.

I can't remember a year when my pepper plants have faired as poorly as this year. Hopefully the current warm spell with today's rain will rejuvenate them. I can and freeze a lot of sweet bell peppers so having a poor year will have a adverse affect on our winter larder.
The lack of full sun and too much cool, rainy early weather did my peppers no good. Now they are picking up steam. I put up pickled bananna peppers so I also rely on a good crop. Last years crop was the best with all the heat we had. The rain we are getting is definetly better than any watering system. I swear everything doubled in size overnight. We can't keep up on the strawberries. Cindy needs to make jam ASAP.

Anyway, here's what I did find this morning, behind the barn. Storm brought it down last night. Only my husband (who wields the chainsaw) can truly appreciate the irony but we just finished burning the other half of the tree that fell down over the winter. Acer negundo.
Have chainsaw(s). Can travel.

I have three copies of the book so far, I need two more so each of my kids can have one. The author sent a letter and a copy to all the grandkids (my dad) and kids. These days more and more people don't know about their families past.

Wow that cost a lot to find out about the birds. What happened to the rest of the flock?
most of the adult birds survived I lost about 11 birds in 2 yrs.......maybe more some mystry deaths could have been from Mareks also??

Anyone interested in 6 guineas.. i am selling them 6 for $25. I live in oscoda.. If you interested message me.. I would like them gone by friday.. the guy i hatched them for backed out of his 6. so now i am going to try sell them.

I have not told Cindy about the PM I got from someone that wants me to bring chickens to her house, or is that does not want me to bring chickens to her house. Oh well best to bring them.

Yuck, my chickens have lice. I guess I shouldn't have put off treating them with Frontline this year. They are in my tractor with my 2 month old seramas, and I also found some on my three day old chicks THAT HAVE NOT BEEN OUT OF THE HOUSE. Grrrr. I wonder if they were in the new wood shavings, or food I put in the plastic tote/brooder? Can lice eggs have been inside the chicken eggs? Oh, and the lice was crawling merrily over a bunch of diatomaceous earth under the shavings. Growing less and less impressed with that stuff. I think I can figure out how to treat the older birds, but any tips on making sure my 3 day old chicks get lice free? I worry about chemicals when they are so tiny. At what age can I use Frontline or Ivermectin drops on their backs for parasites? I know they are bird lice, but I feel all twitchy now...
