out I used
Yesterday every bunch of birds were stubborn brats. No one wanted to cooperate in any way and chores were difficult. DH said it was because it rained all day and they have forgotten what it is like. My cousin who lives in Alaska has a little girl about 6. She has decided she wants chickens but the grizzlies eat them so they can't. I sent my son out to do a video and take pictures for her. We are also sending her a stuffed chicken. So I have a few new pictures. A meat roo, A Malay hen and a modern Game girl. The not so annoying Sebright boy and girls who need a home Olivia Perry - A silkie x polish My Bantam cochin flock where they like to hang out. There are six, Two do not yet have names but Arthur, Olivia, Skippyjon, George. These are the ones who go to the library.
Please let me know how your Malay turns out i used to raise them and just don't have space for them at my new house... I love them all the same

Good morning, all... That storm was unreal yesterday. AND, unfortunately, I was just west of Brighton on the freeway heading home from airport, when it hit. Traffic on I-96 literally went from 80mph to 25mph in seconds...just a tad scary.. AND, when I got home, no Internet..not sure what is going on..SO, had to wait to get to work this morning to get back on line! ---- SO sorry to all that have had losses recently..:-( ---- AND, thanks to everyone for the advice on what to do for Spaz and what to do WITH Bigboy (freezer camp becoming a BIG possibility). Spaz was a bit better yesterday, came out of coop on her own, did see her eating & drinking water. Would occasionally see her in coop alone, then back out. She is still not back to herself. She is letting me hold her so I was able to check her out & clean her "fuzzy butt"..didn't seem pasty, but due to stress I think her poop is a little watery & was stuck in some of the feathers. I am a little worried today as I don't let them free-range while noone is at home. So all of them are stuck in the coop & attached pen...best I can do at the moment..---- Nova, I do think I can make something like you posted..but, I wouldn't be able to leave anyone in it unless one of us is at home..to worried about predators... Ah, chicken life...---- (sorry about the ONE paragraph..once again running into problem where spaces, smileys, etc not working..ARGH)

I would recommend ACV (organic w/mother) in the water 1 tbs per gal. gut flora may be off. I was having trouble with mine. Gave ACV in water and garlic powder in the food and sprayed a fungicide on their back ends. I think my issue stemmed from the overly wet conditions resulting in food that got moldy. but that should help with any gut issues... yogurt is also helpful. Took about 5 days and all my girls that we were having issues with have cleared up.
Seabrights... remind me never to bring another home! LOL they're cute, until they refuse to go in the coop at dusk and then wake you up at 2 am crowing, causing all the other roos to start to crow. .. wee man is gonna be a one person supper real soon!
Felt sick yesterday, driving to the store, I couldn't stop in time and I smoked a wood cock! There are so few of them, I felt so bad for hitting it.
Hope everyone had a great 4th weekend! We managed to get out for a motorcycle ride and took in some fire works, but most of the 4 days we spent roofing the goat shed and power-washed all the rabbit cages and reorganized. I ordered some wood to line the inside of the chicken coop and will be working on that later in the week.

Hey there Tap I would love your Seabrights I have Raz' flock. I have do something with one of the roo's his tail is sideways. My chickens free range and them seabrights can hold their own. Today I saw one on top of my Mom's travel trailer, they can move and get out of the way thats for sure. I don't know what got my little Rouan duck so mad about that, now I have my Pekin in the chicken run that has hardware cloth buried 12 and goes two foot over chickenwire. I think I am getting poultry netting for the night time or do you think two strand hot wire? I want to get another rouan so my pekin can have company.

Thanks, Silly.. Since it is only Spaz, will having that in the water hurt any of the others? Poor Spaz is just a bit traumatized at the moment (at least, I am 99% sure that is the case!); their food in the coop is perfectly dry; BUT, I am sure they have been eating PLENTY of wet stuff while out foraging in the yard over the past week while I have been home!!

So I have a sort of legal question. Since we didn't get a picture of the dogs IN the chicken coops, and didn't grab the dogs when we went running out there in the rain, do we have any shot of taking the owner to (I'm assuming it would be) small claims court to get reimbursed for damages? We know who the owner is now, and one of the dogs was turned into AC by someone else just down the road from us with a face full of porcupine quills yesterday afternoon. A friend of ours is neighbors with the dogs' owner and said that he's out looking for them several times a week because they're always running off AND got into someone else's chickens this year and did a bunch of damage. Just wondering if we have a leg to stand on here, or if we should just go pay a civil visit and let him know what happened. If we can take him to small claims court, we will.

Wynette, my JG hen you gave me is not doing well. She went broody again so I let her, I think that was to much for her twice in one year, do you think? I need some hens. I have a blue teenager and a black young one and one blue and one black 6 week olds all hens. I have the most beautiful blue JG/Golden Buff cross he is just awesome, but I think I will have to give him up becuase I want my flock to free range and I have to make sure my eggs are pure I don't think my little golden seabrights roo's can do anything with a JG hen. But I have seen the little roo's try, it's pretty funny.

I miss those Sebrights, they have a lot of personality. All of my chickens did except for the ISAs. Good layers though.

You might do OK in small claims court. Civil court has a lesser threshold of proof. Get as much evidence as you can. (This is NOT to be construed as legal advice)

Good Tuesday morning everyone!

This article was brought to my attention last evening by a friend who knows about my chickens. I thought it was interesting and worth sharing.

Despite visions of quaint coops, happy birds and cheap eggs, the growing trend of raising backyard chickens in urban settings is backfiring, critics say, as disillusioned city dwellers dump unwanted fowl on animal shelters and sanctuaries.
