Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

And we're up to 25 dead birds now. 17 (yes, 17!!!!!) dead meat chickens, all 8.5 weeks old. I think I'm going to go throw up now.

Is this all from the dogs? Do you know who they belong too? Have you gotten any photos of them in the coop/act? Call the cops... and if you know who ownes the dogs, send them a hefty bill.

really stinks you're losing your birds and in that way.

Yikes, Gladahmae! Hope you get that all sorted. You put so much work into them...

I read that article yesterday via the BYC FB page. I didn't care for it much. Basically it comes down to the fact that it's just another animal for "hipsters" to send to the shelter. It shouldn't be against chickens in particular except for that maybe shelters, like hipsters, don't know how to deal with chickens (kind of like the people who visit my house, hugging their cars when my chickens are wandering around the yard - paying absolutely no mind to the stranger). It's just more fuel, ignorance for the haters and city officials trying to defend their white picket fence attitudes... really. Do I sound bitter? <.<

We have no proof except that both DH and I saw them IN the coop, and DH got out the door first and ran them off.....and of course, bent up fencing and lots of dead birds. Animal Control came out and made a report (I originally called the sheriff's dept and they directed me to Animal Control). We're pretty confident after talking to a few people of who the dogs belong to. We will be making a trip to their house once DH gets home from work tonight to have a talk. This is allegedly not the first chicken incident for these dogs.......

One of the dogs was taken to the shelter by someone on our road yesterday afternoon (as a stray, and had tangled with a porcupine) the AC officer called to let me know that at least HALF of the duo who decided to visit would be securely locked up for the night.

DH knows that next time possession of the dogs is the key.......but really, in the heat of the moment he was just thinking that the sooner he got them out of here, we might have a few birds left. I would probably have done the same, and I know more then he does about the legal requirements after reading about similar incidents on here.

And OF COURSE they got into the tractor with the roosters in it. We had divided up our meaties between girls and boys, so if we decided to do staggered processing it would be easier to just take all the boys in and give the girls another week or 2 if needed. So yeah. They got half of our BIG chickens.

I don't know where this will all land us. I'm hoping they will offer some kind of reimbursement......but I'm not holding my breath.

so sorry for the losses,

duck and chickens!
I hope you were able to save some of the meat, if not maybe you could bag them all up and bring them to the owner, sell them for YOUR cost as dog food,

leaving Sat. for a 2 week camping trip with family, trying to get electric fence in place. got the yellow plastic thingies up and the wire strung, now to figure out how to hook up the box

any one that has an electric fence ,I can use some advice please, I have put a wire holder on each side of the corner post but the wire is touching wood, will that stop the flow? maybe I need to get a proper corner thing. some of my corner posts are metal so I put wood stakes in the ground with the plastic wire guide on each side, . also not sure if I can run the wire up and around the door??

Gladahmae that is a horrific loss. so saddened for you.. all that time and work and money you put into those chickens.. I might of chased them off to in the heat of the moment,,
sure hope you get somekind of reimbursment.. Big Hugs..

Anywhere an electric fence touches wood, metal, the ground, plants, or any other conductive object it will ground out. It should contact only insulators. Make sure you ground the box to a metal post driven well into the ground. The fence write does not have to make a circle. If you run the wire up over the door, it will be a weak spot in your defences. Instead, get an insulated handle to put on the wire at the door.
