Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We too are enjoying homegrown meals. The pork comes from St. Johns, the beef from either our neighbor or Farmerboy, the eggs and chicken come from our flock. All the veggies... cooked kale and garlic, zucchini/summer squash, sweet corn, potatoes, carrots and last night, fresh steamed green beans. Eagerly awaiting the tomatoes still and the winter squash.

I have not seen any hawks circling over our property. See them all the time while driving the area but not here... yet. Matter of time. On the other hand, I talked to the neighbor across the field last night. It turns out a fox was indeed jumping into his makeshift chicken pens and taking his birds, including the two I sold him. He saw them, he said. Not surprising since I've been seeing them behind the barn, sneaking around along the corn. I warned him. I told him he had to have a secure run. But no, he didn't listen to me and I'm sure his daughter was devastated when the second set of chicks disappeared. They haven't taken any of mine yet but I chalk that up to both vigilance and the fact that my chickens keep to the other side of the barn for most of the day where a fox is less likely to appear (more exposed). But occasionally a couple of my bold hens will wander into the corn. I chase them out when I see them doing this but one day, they are going to get it.

Speaking of wildlife... I got charged by a fawn of all things the other night. Thinking I heard a noise outside, I went out to investigate and out of the corn, something was running straight at me. It looked like a large dog in the twilight, like a yellow lab maybe. Terrified me! But it stopped short of knocking me over, huffed and turned - bounded off with its white tail upright - obviously a deer. They are very active now during the day, the young deer. There have been several near misses with the young ones in the last couple of weeks on the road. Adolescents anyway!

I am considering a September hatch, with this weather we have had not sure when winter will come. Have 12 EE and 20 golden sebright eggs that will probably go to waste if I don't. What do you guys think? Anyone else hatching in Sept.

We'll be hatching in September. It'll mean running a lamp at night in the coop for awhile to wean them down to winter temps, but it'll ALSO mean having POL pullets in the spring! It's not the most popular thing to do, but of well!

Yes.. I have a broody sitting on eggs... should be hatching about mid sept. I've had them hatch in October before.. they survived with their mothers without any interference from me.
Roosters are a dime a dozen so they're hard to get rid of. I agree, why give them away as a "free meal" to someone else when you put the money into raising them, you should enjoy a little ROI. We just canned a batch of soup with 3 roos this weekend and 3 more the week prior. The meat is far tastier than what you get in the store... richer. We raise roos up till they start crowing before processing.. but we have processed birds that are a few years old too. I have a few roos at home now that I know need to go, but I like them so much... they're sweet and friendly and come running when they see me. But....I have too many!

Farmer - Guernsey.....that explains those beautiful eyes.... I keep trying to talk myself out of a Jersey cow... I just love em.. but I don't want to be married to milking a cow with just the two of us...We may get a beef cow someday but... it's going to be a while.
In the mean time, I'm hoping the goats will work out for us. I do need to get a couple more does soon.
I look forward to seeing her picts as she grows, hopefully she'll keep her coloring!
Nothings better than doggy therapy... they always seem to know when we're not well and need a little support.

We will definitely be getting an early winter this year. I saw 5 or 6 flocks of geese heading south throughout the day yesterday. We also live by the woods and the trees are changing color more and more every day.

I guess I should start integrating my 9 young pullets into the adult flock before it's too late. I always like to have my young girls settled with the flock long before winter. It makes it easier for them to all be stuck inside with each other.
