Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So sorry for all the predator losses lately....

I have had a juvenile hawk here for months. Literally in one of my trees virtually ALL the time. Screeching incessantly.

I have only seen it go for the birds once. And Bigboy stood his ground. I did put them all in the pen for the remainder of that day. But, since this bird isn't going anywhere else anytime soon, decided I wasn't going to keep the birds locked up for the whole summer. Though I do only let them out if I am around. The cockerels have a call whenever that bird leaves a tree & everyone goes scurrying under the deck or bushes; whatever is closest to where they are foraging (I have a TON of "hiding" places).

While she hasn't gotten one of my birds...she did get a small rabbit the other day.

Hmmmm...never thought about chippy traps & leaving them lying around...have more than enough chipmunks to go around...and squirrels ...

yep i have a trap set along the fence in the back yard, and i dont even put food in it.. still gets the critters.
then i throw the dead chippy in the woods. kinda like a offering to the predators.. i havent had the trap set for about ten days because we went camping for 6 days and then forgot about it till the hawk stopped by.. i have seen hawks in the woods last fall..
I did set the trap yesturday..i will soon have offerings and soon will see if they stop trying to eat my girls.
they are locked up in their enclosed runs.. but man they want out so bad.. I know the older girls watch the skies i have seen them in action..
all my birds are standard bird, the girl that got it yesturday looked full grown

Did have a great tasty dinner from the breast and legs, i pulled fresh carrots, zucchini, onion, and some cabbage..from the garden, kinda like a bakeds boiled dinner.. pretty tasty..

Brand new to this, just getting my research done and tonight someone is coming to look at my shed to see if they can help us convert it. I was planning on buying pullets or young hens maybe off craigslist or wherever, but am reading some about biosecurity and bird diseases, etc. How much of a concern is this realistically and is there somewhere I can buy hens that have been vaccinated or that that is not so much a worry? I am in the grandville area. Thanks for any info you might have.

I think chicks are the way to go. It takes longer to get eggs but you know what you are getting. Townline Hatchery is very close to you. This time of year they only sell Cornish Cross and Is a Brown chicks. I picked up 9 Isa's from them a month ago and they are doing great. I got them the day they were hatched.

We got back from a nice week away yesterday. We drove from GR to Point Betsie, and then to Higgens Lake with many stops in between to check out woods and waterways. It was a great time with only one glitch: our daughter was presenting a lot of appendicitis symptoms which landed her and my husband in a Grayling ER from midnight until 4am. Luckily, it wasn't her appendix, and a few days into a strong antibiotic, she's back to herself.
Every time we passed a coop along the way, I wondered if it was one of you.
Our chickens managed well without us, and the big gals still have healthy looking feet. Phew!

Well, all this hawk talk. Bad juju...

I JUST had a VERY close call. Got home from work, let birds out. Run in, feed dog, change.

Go out to get eggs, fresh water....filled the 3 gal at pump by shed. Was gonna grab eggs, decided to clean & fill one of the 1 gal waterers first. As I am walking to pump, several of the birds come with me to go to some bushes they love foraging thru.

You all know how silent hawks are when they come on for the kill. Well she came in fast, low & quiet not 5 feet from me & a few feet off the ground, right to the birds who were all fuzzy butt out & scratching away oblivious.

I screamed, hawk aborted, re circled & came back in for a retry. But this time everyone was under cover. The others were by the house under the deck, bushes, etc.

Had I decided to get eggs vs. clean/fill another waterer, pretty sure I would be bawling & typing about my first predator loss.....

Hawk went back to one of my trees for a few, then must've found something on front lawn, then boogied across the way (hopefully not to that farmer's ducks...)

Be on the look out!
I am looking for one of these - single or double high. (I would really like to find a free one) willing to tear down and haul away.

wow close call...........too bad you didn't have a bat, could have given that bird a home run across the beak... ahem.. not that I advocate causing harm to a hawk, such lovely creatures.... ;D
