Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I need some advice please... my first chick hatched around 8am. It still can't stand. I think somethings wrong with legs or toes. Its not splay leg because I have seen that before. One leg seems to curl under a little and has curled under toes. I have read about slings and boots just not sure which to use and the best way to do it. Please help! Any advice is appreciated!

Maybe try boots AND a sling? I have never had problems with really crooked toes or splayed legs, but I have read that making little boots with duct tape works great for crooked toes.

Ugh, here I've been waiting a week to get a quote from this guy that said he could help fix up my old shed and convert it to a chicken coop. Finally gives me his quote today of $1200!!! Seriously! I could buy a brand new one for less! Now its back to square one and we are so anxious to get started

man i wish my hubby or i were more handy!

Tsetse... all you need to be "handy" is two hands. I built 4 chicken coops with nothing more than my brains, my back, and my two hands. Might take you a bit longer to do yourself, but really... You'll be proud of it. Post pictures of the shed you want converted, and I am certain that everyone here will be able to offer advice of some form or another on what you will need to do to get it up to par for a chicken residence.

I went yesterday to have the bursa on my elbow drained so I would no longer look like I was auditioning for a Popeye cartoon. Aside for looking horrible it hadn't cause my any discomfort and even the needle stick to drain it was too bad. There was some minor discomfort near the end of the procedure and also when cortisone was injected but nothing of any consequence. However, the stupid bandage that I am supposed to leave on for three days has caused more irritation than the bursa. The doctor was certain that it was caused by an injury and not from rheumatoid arthritis. For the problem with my wrist and thumb he is referring me to a specialist.

I've got to decide which of my older hens I need to remove from my flock and it is a task that has caused much procrastination. You'd think that I wouldn't have any hesitation removing birds yet I do. I look at how beautiful many of them are and find it difficult to decide. Yet with feed costs now exceeding $150 a month it is one I need to do. Several will be destined for a freezer nap and the smaller ones I'll take to the nature center for them to feed the rehabilitating raptors. I had hoped to find a home for the bantam blue orpingtons but that wasn't to be.

Have you ever had a charlie horse occur in your leg just as you start to get out of bed? Your bladder is telling you that it really is time to get up and your leg is telling you to not move. Dueling body parts isn't a good way to start the day but maybe it's nature way of reminding you that you are alive.

Well I off to the three crosswords I work daily and then see what else the day has in store. Hope everyone has a wonderful and productive day.

I am loving the summer weather. Yesterday in town I had a lady tell me "quick go in the store, it's cool" I think she thought I was crazy when I told her "I'm loving the heat."

Speaking of failing bodies Opa, I finally went to see my dr. for my foot that has been numb and tingly and now have tests to be done on top of everything else. As much as we all wish it was so, ignoring things doesn't make them go away, so.....

I lost my male Golden Pheasant last night. Lost as in escaped and ran off into the dark. I'm mad at myself for not deciding on a permanent pen for them and just getting it done. If he doesn't come home I guess I have some hens to sell.

I used bandaids for the boots on one of mine last year. Good for delicate toes.

Lastly, I have five started Delaware chicks, 5-8weeks old, docile, well grown. I dont have a good place to winter them else i would keep them. Next year I will have some more when the other chicken house gets built. They are free to a good home. Their parents just moved to Oscoda.
Ugh! I wish you were closer. I'd take them in a minute.

When I open the pen door the Delawares are the first ones to come see what I have, a couple stand there and almost plead to be petted, they would be a great first flock for a youngster, I spend too much time petting them, but how can you say no ?

Opa, you may be having a salt shortage with those morning leg cramps, it doesnt take much to cure that, another cause can be any of the statin drugs, over time many of them will cause severe leg cramping. Starting with charley horses. Been there, had them.

If you arnt on Statins try some salt off your palm each night before you go to bed.

still trying to figure out what they meant by the "golden years" sure wasn't health or wealth, maybe they were refering to the gold in your teeth, but even THAT doesn't apply any more

Question for those with bantams and standard
my Lavender Amaracaunas are much smaller then my standard, closer to bantam size, Question is,,,,,,, can they run with the larger birds after they are mature, are fine now as they were raised together, I am concerened if a lg. male trys to bread the small hen or the lg. and small rooster gets to fighting. I plan to sepparate them in the spring to breed, but am hoping to put all in the same big coop for winter.....
