Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

This morning when I awoke at 3am, rather than read, I decided to surf through the myriad of selections offered by my cable provider. At that hour the number of shows offering to better my life is almost overwhelming. Imagine how much healthier I be if rather than discarding fruit and vegetable peels I were to start drinking them. Or how much fuller my life would be if I were to act now and order every song ever recorded. No longer would I be faced with the arduous task of rolling up the garden hose. It was reassuring to know that operators were standing by waiting just to speak personally with me. But wait, if I were to act now I could double my order and be able to share with family and friends merely by paying separate shipping and handling.

My remaining two roosters have started to crow and evidently they have decided that another day is about to begin. I had intended to go out to the garden to pick cherry tomatoes for Granny to take with her to church this morning but she just came out and informed me that she had decided to make a salad using Roma tomatoes, green bell peppers, onions, oil, and vinegar instead. Since those items are already in the kitchen there is no need for me to venture out to the garden.

This past week marked the anniversary of Granny's coming to live with us. It's hard to believe that it has been five years. Taking care of our loved ones, insuring that their lives are as full and productive as possible while sometime inconvenient, it still can be quite rewarding. Just the knowledge that you are doing the right thing can't help but make you feel that you are richer person.

At least it's bigger than the 4 we caught on our perch party boat trip. I'm getting anxious to go over to the Muskegon River. Since the heat is delaying the run and driving the fish in the river into deeper holes where they only hit early in the morning, I waiting for a few days in a row of cooler weather.

Kings are in the Muskegon. Kings were in the Betsie early and even more surprising is the Cohos are in the Platte. I'm so busy my license is collecting dust.

On all my other forums I can post at lightning speed. This forum is so slow, and there are so many ads, my load time , and type speed, are very poor. Anyone else with those issues?

Ahhhhh......a rare Sunday off of work. I usually open the restaurant on Sundays, so I end up being gone for the majority of the day. The weather is nice and cool, so DH and the oldest DS are out cutting more firewood. We have permission to cut wood on our neighbor's property.....they had it logged 2 years ago and we have been cutting up the tops for our firewood. The only catch is that we have to cut a load for the neighbor for every load we cut for ourselves. Not a bad deal considering!

Took the kids to 4-H soccer yesterday for their first practices of the year and found out that they have 3 teams of 1st/2nd graders and only one coach "so if you can count to 9, and tell the kids not to use their hands, you can be a coach!" And now I'm "coaching" soccer. I know NOTHING about the sport except the no-hands rule. DH is the same since his school didn't have a soccer team when he went.....should be an interesting year.

I got DH to go out and help me powder all the chicken butts last night, and I wormed everyone while I had help. Hopefully we're OVER this lice stuff, and the ivermectin knocks anything else that may be going on off before cold weather gets here.

Can anyone direct me to a good website or directions for fruit tree care? I have 2 apple trees (honeycrisp and gala) and TSC has a zone 4 hardy pear tree that my oldest desperately wants me to buy. The honeycrisp has been in the ground for 2 years now and bloomed this spring, and the gala went in the ground in May. I've seen sooo much conflicting information about pruning, not pruning, fertilizing, spraying, etc that I have no idea what I really should be doing.

I know this is backyard chickens - and I have already posted this in backyard herds Michigan section - but hoping to spread the word as much as possible. Please feel free to delete this if it is not allowed, but we are getting desperate! Located in Shaftsburg/Perry.

Unfortunately we have some sad news. Apparently after having our little mini-farm for over a year, the county has decided that we are not 'zoned' for farm animals and has ordered us to remove our goat family from our property. We are also in the midst of relocating out of state, so you can imagine our frustration and disappointment! So with deep regret, we are offering our entire herd for sale and need them to go to their new homes ASAP - all offers will be considered however we would like to get about $2000 for the herd. The herd consist of 7 does, 2 bucks, and 1 wether. Most of them are registered, or can be registered. Some placed very well at fair this year and come from great milking lines. We have Rosasharn, Cesars Villa, Maple Ridge, Irish Whispers, and Kyeema Ridge lines.
3 does - ADGA registered
1 doeling (born 7/12) - registerable but we have not registered her yet
3 does - unregistered but from great milking lines!
1 Buck - registered
1 buckling (born 6/21) - registerable but we have not registered him yet
1 wether - wonderful boy but wethers can not be registered. He came with 3 of the girls that we got and is their little buddy!
Two of the does have been bred to our buck. He also got out of the pen one time and we are unsure if he got any of the others. Two of the does are also still in milk and we have gotten up to a quart a day from them. Need to sell ASAP - please if interested come to us as all offers will be considered. Unfortunately we are not able to ship, so would need to be local pickup.

Thank you to anyone that can help spread the word! And... we have already tried the Michigan Right to Farm act with them - they are telling us that only has to do if you are zoned agriculture! We believe it to be a load of BS because if you are already zoned agriculture, why would you have a problem?

If only I could take 'em! Especially because they're from the BIG milking lines!

I wish you could too!!! One of our unregistered does are from the same lines and tattooed, but the breeder we got her from did not register her due to a spur teat. But they really expect her to shine if she was ever to be bred.

If we have any interested parties in all/most of the herd, we may be able to arrange to meet halfway if they are far away.

Tap, My worry with my boys is that they'll be just the two of them. If they were in with other birds and I were not worried about getting EPIC tail growth, I would just Vaseline their combs. Currently, they are ok, but they'll actually be in a coop togther, but separated, so they wont really be getting the group huddle for body heat. That's why I am considering a heat source, thinking on a heat cube. They might get a sound proofed box in the garage too, since it rarely gets below freezing.

Where is Shaftsburg? Aptly named town........ so if you are already moving, why are they not working with you on keeping them until then?
I would be interested in some of the does/doeling... Depending on your location and price. Are they tested for CL/CAE/Johnes?
