Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

do silkies tend to start laying later than 'layer' breeds? I've got a white silkie that's getting to be around the 18wk mark and i'm just wondering if I should open the nest boxes back up. they all got in the habit of sleeping/roosting in them so i went ahead and forced them to find a different place to do that. I just don't want to have to search the run for eggs, or worse, be leaving treats for some kind of egg-eating vermin.

On a non-chicken-related note, I am seriously excited. The kindle edition of my 1st book was available as a free download for 5 days, and had 404 downloads across 9 countries. I felt that was prettygood for a title that has been available in print for 7 years already. :p

congratulations

Thank you, snowflake. :) I miss you all, too. Life has been extra unkind of late, and it is hard to find time for forums, but I stop by periodically to see what you are all up to, even if I don't post. :p Maybe at some point things will get a little easier and I can keep up better.
Sorry to hear of your troubles, wish we could help, hope things get better soon

That would be soooo frustrating!

x2, Nova , being loud in the store when it is full does seem to work, my older daughter used that method with success several times, good luck

hawk made a pass just now, also last night, can't get all the younger birds in, if he takes some one I hope he gets one of my older birds(that I need to cull or one of my extra roos, sure a lot to pick from right now

My silkie started laying 2 weeks ago at 7 months old. It seems that's about the norm. If silkies have a norm. ;)

Got my first blue egg yesterday, very small, from one of my 25 week old Ameracauna pullets!! Last week a couple of the Chantecler pullets started also. YEAH!!! There's hope for more eggs/day soon. We cleaned out the coop, powdered with Sevin, and added new shavings for winter on Sunday. Can't wait for spring... Mary

Hi everyone, nice pictures, and welcome to all the new ones..

I am finally selling out of eggs. been selling 4 and 5 doz at a time.. selling at $2.00 a doz.. wondering if i am selling to cheap. but glad i am making sells.
i already have a back order for 4 doz. which out of 20 hens i am getting 12 -15 eggs a day and 3-4 of those are white.. and some are tiny yet from new layers.. wondering if i should get a few more adult layers.. there is a place about 1hr away that has 24 week old for $3. kinda thinking of hitting them up.. will wait and see if i get some more orders.
i dont sell the tiny eggs and the white ones dont sell as good.. but my browns are size lg,xl, and jumbo. what ever was laid that day goes in the same carton.

i am down to tiny eggs for the family already..

love the chicken working for scratch.. i lol every time i see it.. i even showed it to my family. they got a kick out of it also.

The Delawares are gorgeous! I posted a pic of them a few pages back Naglady! They are younger than my birds, though...I heard they produce jumbo eggs. My girls are three Red sex links and two EE's I am getting medium size seafoam green eggs from both EE's and large/xlarge eggs from the Reds. Usually 3-4 a day, two brown, two green :) I made deviled eggs out of the green ones for a family get together and they were cute bite sized portions! Very good and everyone commented on how nice and orange the yolk color was even after mayo was mixed in. Yummy!
BTW is it just me, or are fresh eggs harder to peel than store ones? I had a heck of a time so any tips out there???

I have leghorn, australorp, isa, rhode island red, delaware and one ee roo.. was suppose to be a pullet

yes fresh eggs are not good for boiling, i heard baking soda in water helps with peeling, but never tried it.
