Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ugh... I got the first round of leaves from the back yard done. There are still plenty of leaves needing to fall from the trees. I fill all the runs with them, and the birds thought I was trying to do some evil on them. One started freaking out, then all the birds were freaking out. There is nothing like 40 odd birds all doing the "scary monster" squawk all at the same time. Yup.

Now I just need to raise the waterers up so they do not get leaf filled, and get the plastic wrap up too. To windy for that right now. Maybe tomorrow.

ALSO, looks like a scary monster did try to get in the marans coop last night too. The fencing that I used to completely cover the run was pushed down like something heavy sat on it. The tarp was torn, and pulled away from where I had it stapled. HAHA sucker! Oh, how I love thwarting them hungry little coons... Never again will I build anything that is not completely fenced all the way around before installing birds. Thinking of getting hot wires come spring. Keep them off the tarped roofs. Good little zap will do them some good. Learn them something. LOL

Well, coffee break is almost over... guess I will go back to finishing up before dark.... Maybe...

Oh... about coops/runs and tarps... I am on year two with the tarp roof. I got the 16x20 from lowes, and I followed Opa's suggestion of the furring strip rolled into it. Worked great. That went OVER the plastic sheeting I put up. I'd also like to say, that I used green plastic poultry fence over top of that sheeting to keep the sheeting from sucking back and forth against the run when the wind blew hard. That worked like a charm too.

This is my first year using a green house as a run. I did build a ground frame for it, then used pipe brackets to keep it in place. Wrapped the whole thing with run fencing. I need to put up the actual green house cover here too, now that weather is changing, and having already put the frame to a wood ground frame, it's going to be easy enough to use furring strips to keep it down tight.

I think with MI weather, a bit of modification is going to be necessary when using prefab metal tubing frames and covers. Yet if you think about it, you'll find its pretty easy to cheaply modify any part, even on the cheapo ones. It's even better when you have a large group of fellows like here to tell you their trials and successes, and you actually use the advice that is given to your benefit.

Truth.

I found some 6 mil plastic at home and garden, but couldn't figure out (in my head anyways) how I can attach this and it not get ripped when the heavy winds hit. Then I seen some mid grade tarp that was 6x25ft. My fence is only 3ft tall so I was thinking of running tarp over it and securing with bungi cords, but the run is 100sq ft and would be more expensive. So, I left w/nothing and thought I would come back here for more ideas 1st. LOL!! Curiosity, would you staple from coop and then go around? Mine is not a covered coop either so I can't just throw it over top either. Hmmm, Still thinking. Saw the temp. garage type Raz had and really liked that, for the 1 I want was almost $400 for 12x20, next yr. I'm hoping.
I tried the 6mil plastic one yr didn't last long the sun rotted it and it was supposed to be UV resistant, the silver and brown tarps seem to last a little longer, we have gone to strapping 1/4 " plywood/,particle board/ to the old garage frame and then tarpping over that, seems to keep the wind damage down, I like Novas idea of putting the chicken netting over the tarps on the top of the run. I have had some up for shade and rain this summer and they are really flapping hard with the fall winds, think I will get some plastic netting over them tomorrow,

I have found that the only way I have been able to get a tarp to last is to roll the edges around 1x3 furring strips and then attach with screws. Additionally it pays to add a few furring strips on top to prevent it from moving as the wind will lift it up even with all four sides secured. This bellying up can tear it.

Every time I get a new picture of my granddaughter I am amazed by how much she has changed. It has been two years since Granny has seen her and she remarked that without the pictures she doesn't think she would recognize her.
very beautiful girl, I thought it was a senior pic.
like that kids are doing their own pics for yr book and graduation, they are very creative and get some beautiful pictures. much nicer then the still, starchy poses we used to have at photographers

we have a great picnic in the summer when you can put faces to names, and talk to chicken crazy people. lots of fun

One very apparent indication that you are getting older is when you attempt to pull up a wrinkled sock only to discover that you weren't wearing any.
Or worse, when you pin that sock to a garter and it hurts.

I thought it was a senior pic.

I remember my senior pictures. They air-brushed out zits for most kids. In my case, they air-brushed out my grey hair.
