Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So sorry Fuzzy. I didn't get on much yesterday so I just got caught up.

Anyone want to help me puzzle through this? Someone not terribly far from us is selling apple crates and I'm trying to think of an easy-to-implement way to use them as brooders or grow-out coops. The biggest problem I see with them is that there appears to be gaps in the sides which apples would need, but I definitely would not want to have for chicks. Add to this that DH does NOT like to have a bunch of "junk" out in the yard, so they would need to be fashioned into some sort of "attractive" end product. Paint would go a long way in that department, but I could use some ideas. I'm a planner.....I like to plan things out, make contingencies, and then get it all done with in one fell swoop. http://nmi.craigslist.org/grd/4249422706.html

paint, trim maybe a flower box on top?

This is a LaCrosse, model WS-1912U-IT. The anemometer has cups positioned vertically. I have it mounted on the peak of the garage and the snow drifted enough to stop it from turning. There is no inside reading. The quality of this unit is somewhat less than the Acu-rite. Available at Meijer.
For my birthday, I would like one of the weather stations that monitor all of the above plus rain fall. They have some really nice ones that record to your computer. That's what I want.

We have the LaCrosse model with the rainfall gauge, and the barometer. It's pretty cool. Hubby has been hacking the code so we can put up a website for people who also have the same model and we can "track " stuff in different areas.

I hope you get one for your Birthday RaZ

To All My Michigan Friends
When I got up yesterday morning and saw "Frost" on the ground, I started feeling really sorry for myself. You see, Himself had cleaned the garage, and in order to do so, had to put my SUV down the driveway about 50 extra feet away, which I would have to cross to get to the vehicle.

So instead of going out, I made a cup of tea and came online. I was HUMBLED when I came on to the Michigan thread and saw what you all are going through. I simply cannot imagine cold below freezing. We got down to 9 once, but that was last year, and lasted a day. After that it was in the teens for a few days. We have had snow, but nothing like you guys.

So, my thoughts are with you all, and hope the "warm front" will come sooner rather than later.

I hope all your birds and critters get through it, and that by the time it gets into the teens, you will all be having a wonder warm, time.

I was going to post that if people had thermometers in their coops then perhaps they wouldn't worry and obsess so much.
We have a thermometer in the coop, and it only supported my worry.

I might have to do some modifications in the spring. Raz, do you have any heat source in this 24 degree coop?

This is the info I have written down, I believe you need to call the animal health to get an apt.

maybe you can just drop in I am not sure, you did good by putting it in the fridge,,,do not freeze I can't find the exact cost but I think it was around $80

Saving that info for the future, thanks.

So I've finally figured out where a snow fence should go (having lived here for two years and never having enough snow on the ground thus far to make that determination). At this point I'd love to drop a photo of my driveway into the post to show you but like billy heck I'm going out there just to snap one. I'm snowed in and DH is snowed out. I'd go and shovel it but I know my limitations --after a serious reaction to an intrathecal during childbirth (middle child), I no longer can do such things without a lot of pain. So I won't. And we'll remain snowed in. But I *should* go and check for eggs. They continue to lay as if nothing was happening outside. The wind decided to pick up though, rendering me... reluctant.

I'm also nearly brimming to the max with a rant that I want to spew concerning my in-laws but I can't bring myself to do it. So I'm going to offer it up in emoticons instead.
