Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Bumblefoot news/ 1 week after initial treatment:

My hen who had surgery i still can't tell, but it looks like the scab that formed is NOT black of the bumble infection. Still more puffy than i'd like, but the daily/ every other day spraying of the protective red -cote seems to be keeping it clean and moisture free. I also spray a good sized bit on a cotton ball and vetwrap it to the wound as well. I had it in my trunk and it didn't freeze, so i don't think it'll freeze their toes. May be a good backup frost bite protector, too? Oil and smells like menthol?

The others that i wrapped with the oil and cotton balls without surgery are looking improved with their scabs looking more like scabs and not the black. On a few of the feet swelling has gone down significantly; on the mommy hen who only had a tiny dot i am sure she won't need it. One girl may still need surgery but only in one of the feet, another needs both feet unless they go down. If nothing else it is keeping the bacteria in check i think!

Everyone got another full ankle down dose of the red cote; even the two new ones since i'm not sure where it's coming from. Keeping those feet clean and soft! Bumble girls got wrapped with the sprayed cotton balls too.

I like the look of these too. Very excellent quality, if she's telling the truth on the bloodlines........https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/756337/blue-laced-red-wyandotte-chicks-npip

I actually hatched out eggs from her last year! I was pleased with what I got. I hatched 6 out of 14 (which I was thrilled with). One didn't do well right off the bat and I culled it after a few days. I lost all but one to the neighbors dogs. I have one pullet remaining and she's very pretty. Not perfect type for a Wyandotte from a breeder perspective but I'm happy with her overall. Plus, the chances of me getting a breeding-quality bird after all that were really low. I was more after the yard candy and thinking about starting a "project". Very nice seller as well.

hmm. the breeders she lists as her startup are the best i know of? Maybe she didn't know what to cull for.....

anywho those sure are some pretty ones! (to my untrained eye)

if any of you are getting shipped eggs this thread may be of some use as well. I did the egg carton hatch for my own hatch, and was pleased. Mine weren't shipped but i read so many good things about the "dry" "egg carton hatch."

Also if any of you have resorted to the old styrofoam bator i have many notes in my siggy link about hatching from one. I had a good hatch, but was sooooo stressful! I have how to calibrate thermometors and hydrogometers as well.

@ Silly, your drawing is GORGEOUS!

(Yep, stirring the pot again)

Trying to prepare for this GAAMPs meeting...I think we'll have a better chance of "victory" if we first DEFINE what a victory would be to us. I don't think a board of councilmen and women want to necessarily hear "Ooh, I just love my chickens, they're so cute..." Of course that's what many of us will be speaking about, and that's fine, but I think that along the way we need to identify what we specifically want. I have the impression-after being on this website for only a couple of months that most of us here are what I call "hobbyist" or "semi-pro", meaning that we either have our chickens for our own use/enjoyment or we supplement our incomes with sales from chicken eggs and occasionally meat. Meaning raising chickens is not our full time or primary occupation. That's what Big Ag does. Politicians, and hopefully councilmembers, pay attention to NUMBERS of people who have identified a common goal.

So whatever we have to say, I think we should end it with something along the lines of "Please exclude Categories 3 and 4 in section 3 from your GAAMPs amendment, thank you." If that's what we really want (the zoning definitions).

Is that what we really want? Am I wrong about all this?

I don't know if you ever participate in Hatch-a-longs but I found this one and have been chatting in it

So far I have only collected the 6 from MindyLee and then 6 of my own mixed breeds. I should have plenty more this weekend if I keep on top of collecting with this weather. I'm kind of excited, I have a silkie and a speckled sussex over my hens. I am really wondering what the White Leghorn babies will look like!
