My chickens started last month one or two, but now several at the same time. Yesterday there were more white feathers on the ground than after the hawk attack. I counted white birds, picked one up only to have two handfuls of feathers fall out. She had a very hard molt last year and looks like it will be the same this year.Umm, does anyone else have birds that are molting? Eggs have gone down to almost zero (except for the ducks) and there are feathers everywhere! You'd think it stormed feathers, hah! I rake them up and within a day or two the coop area is covered again.
Today is the first day the chickens have woken me up with their noise. There was a LOT of clucking going on, and my little cockeral was trying to crow (I think). He can' really do it yet, so it's more like a goose honking at this point, but it was still amusing. My oldest 2 girls are 19wks, so I was kind of hoping that I'd find an egg when I let everyone out, but nope. No such luck.
With my 2 wyandottes being 19wks, and the other 8 girls being 16wks, should I put some decoys in the nest boxes to give them the idea???
Hey - this is wingless, the fourth musketeer at the Ag Commission meeting today. I thought fuzzy, farmerboy16 and RaZ did great work, and altogether we covered a lot of ground. I think it is now clear to all the commissioners that the issues they'll be voting on in December are very significant, and deserve considerable attention. That's a big win all by itself.
I also really loved seeing your farm, farmerboy. Thanks so much for showing us around - and if you're ever in Ann Arbor be sure to come visit my birds! (Yes, I really do only have 3...)
