Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have fallen 3 times on the ice this season. So far more bruised ego than anything else. A few sore muscles. Our driveway was like a sheet of ice and we keep working at it. We had to use a lot of salt, which I hate having to do because of the cats who go out on it now, and the chickens walking on it come spring. There is now a path cleared to the coop that is relatively clear. I spent a lot of time chopping and shoveling a 3-4 inch thick slab (made from dripping icicles) by the garage. Hopefully now I can go out to give the girls their water without falling on my...well you know.

We're only in for 3-6 inches of snow down here. I try to coax the girls out for a little while but they really dislike the snow. I see pictures of other chickens on the snow, but not mine. I have a picture of them out one time but they zigzagged around on the bare spots. They ended up on the ice and weren't sure what to do about it.

Another morning that starting out with arctic temperatures and subzero windchills. This is one winter that I will be glad to see the last of. The day has started with sunshine which helps make the day seem a little less daunting and receiving a phone call from a fellow BYCer stating they were coming by to visit has suddenly made the day a lot brighter. As Chickflick stated earlier this thread has been a great place to meet people who share our interests and I have been blessed to make more than a few friends.

On Saturday I was at TCS in Howell and they had an abundance of wood shavings, both fine and coarse.

I've search the thread and the entire site (and I don't want to be a bother), but I can't seem to find anywhere if someone mentioned what bantams Townline had this year.

We're getting our chickens next week, and all of sudden, I'm quite nervous about this new endeavor (new mama syndrome?!), and just want to make sure we pick the right breed/companion for our buff orpington and silver-laced wyandotte.

I would like a brown or blue pullet, and have looked at Welsummers (which Townline doesn't sex), Ameraucanas, and then I'm very curious about Bantams -- I'm not even sure I'm pronouncing it correctly! I think I'll have to get on PronounceHow (dot) com!

I was curious about this too so I just called them & asked what breeds they're doing this year.

Here's the list:

Porcelain
Mille Fleur
Golden Sebright
Silver Sebright
White Silkie
Red Pyle Old English
Brown Old English
Silver Duckwing Old English

So you know, they don't sort the chicks by breed or sex. This is what you could find "in the bin".

I fell once, slipped more times than i could count. Aaaand been walking on the path only to step through the top layer and "fall through"it. DONE with it! I wonder what the going rate is for a chiropractor???? Feels like i'm trapped in ice. I usually like being outside, even in winter.

HDF: This wouldn't be a contest I'd like to win, but at the same time I'd like to win with that count so no one has to fall!

i've slipped "skated" a few times walking across the icy driveway, but not actually fallen, so maybe that counts as a 1/2 a point ?

Sure, give yourself a half point for every slip errr ah , I mean "skate", you do! Then no one else will fall and I might not win this one!

Quote: Does anyone know why they don't sort them out for breed at least? I understand not sorting for the sex but not the breed? Best wishes to all in getting what they'd like.

I love your morning cartoon pics. They start the day on a pleasant and humorous note.

We still have shavings here in NW Ohio. I was beginning to think I might have to "export" some to all of you nice folks up there.
