Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Some people watch the news, weather, or whatever on their television. Here, we have The Goat Channel. The black doe (you can see her white side mark in the pic) is due March 12th, and has been acting different. So, to keep eyes on her, I set up a security camera!

I was at the Family Farm & Home yesterday & they were completely 100% out of the Wayne Davis wood shavings bedding. I remember reading something on here a week or so ago about someone not finding the bedding at their store. I didn't really pay attention then, cuz I use what I use & I get it from the local store... LOL. Maybe I should have participated in that part of the conversation since now here I am, all out of bedding. Is there something going on? I prefer the Wayne Davis $5 a bag/bale of the pine bedding. They did have another "not sure what it was" brand of bedding/shavings... but to call it shavings is an overstatement. It was so finely shaved it was like sawdust, and I don't care for that in my coop, plus it's not good for chicks either. I was NOT impressed yesterday to see that FF&H had out these tiny little bundles of shavings (they were MAYBE a quarter of the size of the Wayne Davis)... for $8.00! Selling it right next to the chicks. So if someone wanted chicks & needed bedding for their brooder they'd have to either get the sawdust or pay the ungodly price for a small amount of it. Seems a bit shady FF&H... not right.

Does anybody use the pellets in their brooder boxes? I can make do with this or other stuff for my coop, I would only use a small layer of the shavings to begin with, but I'm curious about the brooder box.

Photo of a porcelian chick........ they are very flighty, but cute birds.
Silly, do you have a pair of porcelains? I'll be looking for a handful of fertile eggs if/when one of our hens go broody. We had two last spring, but one was a roo and was rehomed, and the other had cross beak, and died. We have a mille fleur, and I really like their personality.

Thanks, everyone!

With all the straight runs, how many roosters do you usually end up with? Do you keep them, eat them, sell them, re-home them?

LOL. Well, if you go to Family Farm & Home you'll have a better chance of getting pullets over cockerels since they order sorted chicks (with the exception of the Cornish Cross, bantams, & Welsummers).

If you really want the bantams though... you'll just have to try your luck.

My daughter picked out 1 banty from the bin last year... cutie little chipmunk (later found out was an old english bantam), and of course it was a roo. That was our luck. He ended up being a HILARIOUS little fella. Very entertaining in the middle of a flock of full grown hens & a big brahma rooster. Little big man.

I'm not sure if there'd be much worth for eating them... but you could - little game birds. You can try to re-home them on craigslist, or keep them. It's all personal preference.

My daughter ended up showing her little roo in 4H last fall. He was her showmanship bird.

We plan on getting about 3-4 banties out of the bin this year. I've made a note of all the colors/marking so hopefully I'll have a clue on what breed we're getting when we pick them out.

that is so sweet, wish we had a security cam.

was at TSC in Lowell they have both fine and reg. shavings today, as well as chicks, Welsummers among them, and you could pick out the hens rather easily, they have the more defined chipmunk markings correct???

be careful with the fine shavings, I believe some one had chicks die on that and thought they were eating it and getting plugged up
