Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I got my first two frozen eggs today. And then the only good one, I dropped it and it broke!:

I did get a large egg from Bonnie the temporary house chicken. I guess the only thing out broken eggs, the chickens are happy .

Photo of a porcelian chick........ they are very flighty, but cute birds.

sooooooo cute

Hi guys. Need help or at least advice. I have a 16 month old hen who disappeared 3 days ago. I found her this morning wedged in an area I didn't think a chicken could possibly get into. She was trapped there for the whole time I think! Her feet were exposed to the outside, while her body was up against a bale of straw. She was, of course, severely dehydrated. Her legs are frozen solid. I gave her water with electrolytes (for chicks) and have her wrapped in a fleece blanket in the basement. I don't want to put her down if I don't have to. She is alert and drinking. Wasn't sure if she can have food or not right away. It's likely that she may lose one or both feet/legs. I could not miss work today but my son is keeping her hydrated. I will give her a lukewarm bath and wrap her legs loosely when I get home. I have aloe vera with lidocaine, bag balm, blue Cote, etc. Any suggestions on what else I can do for her?
Don't use the lidocaine. If it doesn't cause her a lot of pain massaging her legs might help, other than that you might want to do a search on what to do about frostbite. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and her, hoping the damage isn't too bad.

With all the straight runs, how many roosters do you usually end up with? Do you keep them, eat them, sell them, re-home them?

LOL. Well, if you go to Family Farm & Home you'll have a better chance of getting pullets over cockerels since they order sorted chicks (with the exception of the Cornish Cross, bantams, & Welsummers).

If you really want the bantams though... you'll just have to try your luck.

My daughter picked out 1 banty from the bin last year... cutie little chipmunk (later found out was an old english bantam), and of course it was a roo. That was our luck. He ended up being a HILARIOUS little fella. Very entertaining in the middle of a flock of full grown hens & a big brahma rooster. Little big man.

I'm not sure if there'd be much worth for eating them... but you could - little game birds. You can try to re-home them on craigslist, or keep them. It's all personal preference.

My daughter ended up showing her little roo in 4H last fall. He was her showmanship bird.

We plan on getting about 3-4 banties out of the bin this year. I've made a note of all the colors/marking so hopefully I'll have a clue on what breed we're getting when we pick them out.

We're only on a half-acre lot or else I'd probably throw in a few bantams -- I love the porcelain and the silkies! I don't think I could ever eat one of my roos -- but my neighbors probably would if they got too loud! ; )

Well we said we were going to wait. We were going to wait until the thawed out just a little bit. But darn it if those little fluff balls didn't get me at TSC.

So now we have 26 black sex-linked chickens. None of them have a white spot on their head so we're hoping they're all female (please no body tell me I got the two mixed up and now have 26 roosters). I thought it was strange that the black sex-linked were labeled as 'Straight-run', but they all looked the same and were $1 cheaper than the red pullets (which were a mix of RIR, Orpintons, ISA browns, etc).

I miss having little fluff balls running around! I'm sure after a couple of weeks I'll remember what I said to my husband last year: "Next year we'll just buy older pullets, let some other fool raise the messy beasts!" Well, I guess we're playing the fool again this year.

TSC in Lowell doesn't have a whole lot in the way of variety. They had some meaties, mixed duckies, mixed pullets (ambers, barred rocks and something else), welsummers and maybe one more - can't remember.

I wasn't in the market for chicks anyhow. I'm looking for maple tree tapping supplies. Anyone know who has some? Just want the spiles. It's not too late to tap right? With this frigid stuff going on?

Not gonna shear the sheep for a while now, until this cold snap blows over and any subsequent cold snaps that follow. They need that wool to keep them toasty. I'm even putting off thinking about starting garden seeds indoors as this colder weather will definitely keep the ground cold for longer. I can't even get basil to germinate in the house because most window areas are in the 50's. I have to put them over a heat vent to get them to germinate and then move them to the sunny window to grow, but even then it's slow-going. I have a seed warming mat somewhere but it wasn't worth digging it out to sprout my son's styrofoam cup of 3 seeds from his school project.

There's plenty of time to be thinking about building some more cold frames though! I still have plenty of old storm windows that I didn't put into the coop that would make excellent cold frames. Might come in handy this spring.
