LOL. Well, if you go to Family Farm & Home you'll have a better chance of getting pullets over cockerels since they order sorted chicks (with the exception of the Cornish Cross, bantams, & Welsummers).
so how did she do? nice pic. would like to get my granddaughters into 4-H they love the chickens

She did good on the showmanship. It was her first year... there was a LOT to memorize & she was afraid, but she handled it very well overall. She's a fairly shy girl to begin with so it was a hard thing for her to get up in front of people and talk to a stranger. She did better with her meat class birds and the open class, where the judge the bird and not the girl. She showed her white leghorn for open class and took 1st place. She didn't place in the meat class, but raised enough money at the auction to cover the costs for the flock and she had a great learning experience. That's all I can ask for. Unfortunately her white leghorn "Popcorn" was killed earlier this winter by a mink.

Ok. This whole winter thing is getting downright ridiculous. It's 0 degrees here, and now the forecast is showing another 4-8" of snow for this weekend.....along with below freezing temps...

My heated waterer is being finicky & I'm worried the water will freeze while I'm at work today. Is it safe to assume the birds will be ok for a few hours if it does freeze?
I would agree they would be fine. glad it is working though no fun to worry

Photo of a porcelian chick........ they are very flighty, but cute birds.
LOVE the baby chick and the clown feet,,, the feathers on those feet are awesome!!

got to go out and clean poop boards, brought the hens a treat a while ago, I swear they are moaning about this weather too

Hi guys. Need help or at least advice. I have a 16 month old hen who disappeared 3 days ago. I found her this morning wedged in an area I didn't think a chicken could possibly get into. She was trapped there for the whole time I think! Her feet were exposed to the outside, while her body was up against a bale of straw.She was, of course, severely dehydrated. Her legs are frozen solid. I gave her water with electrolytes (for chicks) and have her wrapped in a fleece blanket in the basement. I don't want to put her down if I don't have to. She is alert and drinking. Wasn't sure if she can have food or not right away. It's likely that she may lose one or both feet/legs. I could not miss work today but my son is keeping her hydrated. I will give her a lukewarm bath and wrap her legs loosely when I get home. I have aloe vera with lidocaine, bag balm, blue Cote, etc. Any suggestions on what else I can do for her?

I have no advice, but I hope you find her injury less severe than expected when you get home from work. Poor gal.

Well, heated waterer did fine today; almost 12 hours, so it is working just fine. Of course most of the 5 eggs in the nest box exploded...& I'll lose all my eggs tomorrow, too as the reason I HAD to go in today vs. Teleworking was rescheduled til tomorrow (which I was gonna telework). Am a tad miffed, but what can ya do. My work is so cool & flexible with me, what's a dozen or so frozen eggs, right? I am very fortunate...

Gaitngirl...so sorry about your hen. That sounds just horrible. Can't offer any advice (many more experienced friends here that I'm sure can) other than I thought we weren't supposed to use anything on the chickens that had "caine" in it.....hope she makes it ....

its always nice when they sync up and lay on the same day. Had 5 unfrozen eggs waiting for me when I came home today. Now If I can just get rid of the iced up path to the coop.

Update: make that 8 eggs frozen. 3 were buried in the left hand corner of the coop! Only 1 of the 8 actually split, I am just assuming the rest are frozen so I won't sell them & will just keep for us/dog. Just kind of bummed cuz both Marans are laying gorgeous, jumbo dark eggs...& my work customers love them...the 2 from today will stay home :(

@mattsinger
Very pretty, dark eggs :D
