Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I just got this Silkie last night, and I noticed after I got her home and today that her vent seems to be "big" (this is the first time at chicks for me, so I apologize about the best descriptions) and it will pulsate.

Is this normal? Is she just stressed getting into her new environment? I wasn't sure if it was because her poo was getting stuck in her feathers a little, so I trimmed those lower ones.

shes fine
Rub some Vaseline on it to keep poo from stickin

Stopped in at TSC in Hudsonville and all they have is some pullets in one bin (various breeds), straight run "americanas", meat chickens, and some ducks. The bantam bin was empty.

I did grab their "special order" form and the chicks listed are not on the Stateline website, so I wonder where they get them from. There are a few breeds I would like but unfortunately I do not want to get 25 total.

You can always share an order with someone close by. I know of 2 BYCers who met at the Whitmore Laked TSC this week and split an order to reach the "6 chick minimum" rule.

I'm wondering what the Jackson Road (Ann Arbor) TSC will have come Monday?

i did a special order from them last year and my chicks came from Priviet Hatchery out in California, I saw the store I was in could order them form several different hatchery's so you might ask them to or if they can order them from a specific hatchery the nice thing is that you do not have to pay shipping when you order them through tsc. so the price to figure plus tax is it. one of the reason i went that route last year. course i think there a couple hatchery's that don't charge shipping like strombergs its built into their price.

Raz, TSC is really good about giving out information regarding their "spring" chick sale. They usually have an idea ahead of time what they will be recieving from the hatchery. They will also handle any special orders you might want that they dont carry in store.

I think that highly depends on what store and who is working there....I've read horror stories about some of them....my TSC has some great folks and some real idiots. Then too 'Corporate' often has control.

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. This is a bad time of year to window shop at TSC or any other place that has chicks.

The Whitmore Lake TSC said on the phone that they had bantams, but they were really black Australorp pullets. Sometimes mistakes are made.

Thanks @mindylee and @eatwhatyougrow for the reassurance that it was normal. All the books I read in preparation for my baby chicks was good, but I think its like parenting -- not everything is in the manual and you'll freak out with your first!

And thanks @SillyChick for your encouraging words!

I really do enjoy reading about everyone's tales and I'm learning a lot just from observation. And I just LOVE and look forward to @Opa 's comics!
