Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

My Dh does not care for her. When I told him she was going to be at the Ag meeting, his response was "Does that mean you get to egg her?"

I have had lots of chicks and never had a picking problem. I know I have been lucky but I have my first. One little welsummer has a spot where she is missing feathers. So I had to separate her out in her own tank. I tried bluekote and a red light but nothing kept them from picking on her. So now she is getting lots of people attention. I hold her while reading and she snuggles up and goes to sleep. She has been named Chiclet.
I listen to a podcast that suggests you put bluecote on multiple birds if one is having problems. They peck at each other for a while but then get bored with it because they all have it on. The one you're trying to heal up doesn't get targeted for having something different.

We lost internet again for several days and I'm 130 posts in debt once again. There is zero chance of catching up. I apologize.

I just wanted to say thank you to whoever it was that mentioned BORNHOLM disease on the board months ago. After I had another painful flair up last week, I asked the Dr. for a blood test and it came back positive! Nine years ago in June I contracted the coxsackie B virus (bornholm) and suffered painful "devil's grip" attacks every couple of years and had NO CLUE what caused it. Doctors told me I was pulling muscles and that was pure BS, doctors who would not take me seriously, who were too lazy to do some homework. It has created so much anxiety in my life, nine years of it. Now I know and peace of mind.

So, whoever EVER comes in here and complains of discussions going off the poultry topic... they can kiss my a**. Telling stories, sharing our experiences is what being social is about and that is the category that this thread is in: BYC Forum>Social>Where am I? Where are you!> Michigan Thread - all are welcome!. I am very grateful to hear everything everyone has to say... when I have the time and connectivity to keep up with it

Has anyone else's run flooded with the warm weather?

not exactly flooded but still full of ice, snow, and now MUD threw a little hay in there to give them a dry place to stand, as soon as this thaws will rake it out. maybe a bale of wood pellets or shavings would work to dry it up faster??

Bring on the green grass flowers and butterflies!

My run is very wet also, first spring learning where the waters flow, but seems to drain and dry pretty well.
I too spread some straw, for me to walk on, that shouldn't get too nasty in the long run.

Just saw this posted on FB:
The Michigan Commission on Agriculture has delayed its vote on a controversial suggestion that the state distance itself from small-scale and hobby farms by removing Right to Farm Act protection from farms with animals in residential districts.

@ladyrsanti I'm so glad you have answers. The internet has allowed so many useful connections and conversations that wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Pretty tulip, Brennigan.

I had a meeting in Holland, and stopped at the FFH and the TSC on the way back, hoping to find porcelain d'uccles. Nope. Both stores had bantams, but not those. We've decided not to have our silkie hatch a clutch. We're not patient enough. ;)

When yer right yer right!

Happy Spring (even with an inch of snow). Saps flowing, sort of, and I'll be firing up the wood next week to boil down some maple. It's definitely a see saw season.

I was curious about this too so I just called them & asked what breeds they're doing this year.

Here's the list:

Porcelain
Mille Fleur
Golden Sebright
Silver Sebright
White Silkie
Red Pyle Old English
Brown Old English
Silver Duckwing Old English

So you know, they don't sort the chicks by breed or sex. This is what you could find "in the bin".

Maah, thanks for posting this a while back. One of the chicks in the bantam bin today was yellow and had feather legs, didn't have the silkie head vault/dome. I wonder what it could have been. I don't think it would have been any of these, right?

Yes, it could have been 2 from the list. Either silkie or porcelain. Although a common silkie chick trait, a silkie chick doesn't always have the dome on the head. You would be able to tell the difference between the silkie & the porcelain chicks easily by the skin color. Silkie will have black skin, porcelain will be your standard issue chicken color. ;) Most likely what you were seeing is the porcelain... So, what store was this cuz that's what I've been looking for!! I'll race you for it. LOL!
