Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Botulism toxin is deactivated, and the actual bacteria die, but botulism has a spore form that requires pressurized steam and heat to kill. That is why improperly canned foods can harbor botulism, even if boiled. However, I have not heard of botulism in maple syrup.

Welcome rfournier. You will find that the Michigan thread is one of the most active on BYC. I believe there are several members in the Livonia area. Also, in June Chickenstock is a great opportunity to meet other members from all over the state.

So, is the Michigan thread still going?  I am new to BYC & I really need to get to know some local chicken owners,.  Im new at this & need some people that are closer to me than California..lol.   I live in Livonia, MI .  Thank you!

Hello! I work in Livonia! Does Livonia allow chickens?

Heheh, sorry, botulism was a bad example. I was thinking of honey and yeah, I don't actually know that much about botulism except that it's sort of the exception to the pasteurization rule. Isn't that the one that you can't detect through smell or taste, if it's in your canned goods? Learn something new every day, or a couple of somethings, from all you smart folks.

Advise to other potential hatchers, BUY A BROODY! I've been looking for a silkie hen for a year now, those things always seem to be broody!!!

I think I have a "defective" silkie, lol. She is a terrible broody - She gets the urge about once every 3 weeks, but only sits for about a week before she gives up. Oh well, at least she's cute. ;)

Also - sorry about your eggs. I know you were really hoping. :(

I will have to cull her, but she is carrying twins, so I will have to wait for her to give birth before putting her down, but I am hoping that I can sell her for meat so she won't be wasted, I can't bring myself to eat her.
I really really hope that her babies are girls. I noticed a few weeks ago that she is starting to bag up, so I am watching her like a hawk, for her babies cannot touch her and she cannot touch them to prevent her transmitting the disease. I will have to bottle feed them cow's colostrum when they are born for the disease can be passed through the her milk.
Oh, how sad! I'm so sorry, that must be really hard. :(

I send most of my deliveries to my office, so that things don't sit out on my porch all day in the weather and get damaged, either from rain or the cold. Back in January I ordered seed potatoes from a place online and they notified me on Wed that they were being shipped, but no eta was provided. I didn't see them on Thursday or Friday, and the mail had not been delivered by the time I went home on Sat.

So what do I find waiting for me on my arrival to work today? Frozen seed potatoes! OMG I'm so ****** right now.... Does anyone know if freezing kills them off completely, or is there hope that they will still sprout?
