I send most of my deliveries to my office, so that things don't sit out on my porch all day in the weather and get damaged, either from rain or the cold. Back in January I ordered seed potatoes from a place online and they notified me on Wed that they were being shipped, but no eta was provided. I didn't see them on Thursday or Friday, and the mail had not been delivered by the time I went home on Sat.

So what do I find waiting for me on my arrival to work today? Frozen seed potatoes! OMG I'm so ****** right now.... Does anyone know if freezing kills them off completely, or is there hope that they will still sprout?

They may be alright, may not. I had the leftovers of last year's crop in the unheated mud room ALL winter and some are sprouted and some are completely rotten. It's only slightly warmer in there than the outside temp. That's probably not helpful. I'd bring them in and wait and see if they start to develop or get funky.

@Candy442 - I lived on Mulberry for a long time growing up at 16 & gratiot. Late 80's and early 90's

@DimondaleBergs -Have a cousin right by you. Such a small world. We were gonna stop by and see her on our way to chickenstock this yr since were never in the area.

@crazyforchix and @ rfournier-Welcome

@Elyssia001 -Would they maybe just go into hibernation like plants and seeds do? Maybe if u call a nursery, they can tell you.

@HollyDuckFarmer - My muscovy duck has been in the Campbell's dog house for 2 days. They are all almost a yr old now. Do you think she may be broody and if she is and stays in there, how do I clean or anything or do I just leave her alone? Will she just keep laying an egg a day while she's in there? Was hoping for a broody hen, but some baby ducks would be cute too. lol I don't even know if she's on her egg or the campbell's, there can only be 1 or 2 eggs cuz i collect everyday. Thanks for any help

Capac allows- Cows and Pigs and Chickens and that's how you get CAPAC Even in town on a small lot you can have 3 hens, no roosters. I'm outside of town (actually in Mussey twp) and luckily zoned agriculture. I've never looked up what my limit is or anything, but everybody here has animals, lots of goats too

I'll give it a try, but I still wrote the merchant a letter. I mean, who ships perishables in the middle of the week? Ugh. It'll be about a week before I know if there is any hope.

I don't think botulism would be a problem in maple syrup. Doesn't it have too much sugar in it?
Never heard of any problems with Maple. Even if you have a little mold you can scoop it out and use it. I think people are over thinking this process. It's boiled and finished above the boiling point of water. Then, while still hot, it goes in sterilized (mason) jars/bottles and is water bathed for ---- minutes (your call), then as they cool the lids/caps seal. I store it in the cellar for years and have never seen mold, or had a problem. Since I don't have a commercial filtering system there is usually some "debris" (fine dust) on the bottom that actually seats itself and won't really move when poured unless you shook the jar. You can "rack" off the syrup (like wine) and re-bottle if you don't want that sediment to be present. But, the sediment, won't hurt you either as it's just microorganisms, ash, and god-knows-what-else.

Sometimes technology, and science, are setbacks to perfectly good fun burning wood and reducing sap to amber heaven!

FYI, I got an email from my Mom and Dad this morning. They live in Maine. Yesterday was Maple Sugar Day in Maine (yeah it's an actual day). They drove all over the back roads hitting different syrup producers (sugar bushes)(maple farms) to sample wares and buy syrup. The going price was $15/quart. Seems high but it might be due to the slow start this year.

Wow, I lived in that same neighborhood for 13 years and went to Clinton Valley Elementary school. I was actually graduated from HS way before you lived there though...

I moved in 69 from there to 16 and Garfield area my freshman year in HS.

@Farmerboy16 So sorry about your girl. Hope the twins are ok and you have a clean delivery.
@RaZ Thanks for all the updates and all of those attending meetings and sending emails. I don't think the rest of the non farm world realize how these changes can and will impact their rights and life. So thanks for fighting the battle.

Welcome to All the Newcomers!!!

This week I have 16 chicks coming from Meyer. so excited to get some more girls for laying!

And how long does it take to get that quart of syrup? Price of the jar and lid?

I don't think that $15/qt. is all that bad.
