It was far from "lazy" here today. The girls were hard at work in the garden. They were digging and scratching and working the sun-warmed soil.

I took several breaks while cleaning up the hosta garden and raking up the dog areas. The back 40 looks pretty good.

Hello, I am a new member, and new to owning my own chickens although I was raised in the farm life. I have been coming to the site for info for months, just never posting or interacting until now. I'm in harbor springs, (near Petoskey) and am from East Jordan. I have a Welsummer, a SLW, and an ISA brown. All young pullets right now. I'd love to know if there are any good places to get chicks/eggs near me, especially for the different Wyandottes. I don't know much about the breeds, but we would like layers and aren't interested really in meat birds. My husband would also like the birds to be beautiful and friendly varieties, thus why the search is on for quality chicks :)

Yeah someone local! Welcome! I'm up between Levering and Carp Lake. There aren't many choices up here. If you want some different breeds, I will have eggs once the snow leaves and I can split breeds up.

I'm up north, TC area.... What predators are people usually dealing with? Any weasels? Fox? We are new to the area and are out in the county in a mostly wooded-esque area, but only a few miles from city limits. No stray cats. I currently have a mass infestation of kangaroo mice, so I know I don't have too many predators right now. Just wondering what others are dealing with in the area. I appreciate input and perspectives.

The raptors have been incredible with migration lately. For us loses are, 1 hawk, 2- coyote, 3- dog and 4-fox.

Beautiful day today! I was gone most of the day, hope it's as nice tomorrow.

You know that old saying...."A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"?.... well, I've been trawling through this site for weeks now getting info and I truly never realized how many afflictions/diseases/parasites a chicken could get!!...eww!, its kind of making me wonder if I should get chickens after all

The alternative is the factory raised chicken. Or the battery eggs.

Anyway, welcome to the thread.
Despite the drawbacks of raising one's own food, the benefits outweigh the negatives. IMO

Most home kept chickens are quite healthy as long as they are given adequate housing, a good diet, and water to drink.

Welcome to the Michigan thread. I am in St. Ignace. Right now the only purebred birds I have are Cream Legbars, my Swedish Flower Hens are too young and small in number at this time for egg saving. If you would like eggs, or chicks if I hatch this spring, let me know. Taprock has several nice breeds.

I have to say the same thing.
My hens are healthy and happy.
They are pest free naturally and have no illness.
As an added bonus, they have improved my life style as well.
