Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

You know, I am still thinking of putting up a barn owl box. I know the chances are slim it will attract the target species. It won't be that hard to built one, and it'll be a little bit of hope. It may never get used by a barn owl. But if it does, it will be fantastic!

The reasoning being, is there are confirmed breeding barn owls in Langlade County in Wisconsin. The UP seems closer to the Wisconsin than the rest of Michigan. And where I am is in a warmer/less harsh 'banana belt', which might allow for easier winter survival. One can hope, right?

That sounds great! I hope it didn't sound like I was trying to dissuade you, just wanted you to know the situation. If it's not too much trouble to build, it certainly can't hurt to put one up; I was reading that lack of suitable nesting spots may be a factor in their very limited breeding here, so if there is a pair nearby, at least they will have a place to nest! Good news that they're breeding in Wisconsin, I agree it's possible they could move into the UP that way.

Good luck!! And definitely let us know if you do get some nesting there

So far I have 3 new chicks, thanks to Maia! 2 hatched yesterday in the morn (well, 3, but 1 was DOA), 1 last night. Don't know if there are any others underneath her. Of the 3, 2 are Marans x EE, the other EE x EE. They are just so darn CUTE! 1 is all black, 1 black w/white breast, 1 grey/tannish...

Just went out & the 3 were running around by the food...ran to hide under mama when I opened the door to freshen water!

Would post pix, but BYC has not been cooperative for the last 24hrs or so....

This has been so cool with my first broody :D

Hey I am looking for some bantam pullets/hens. If you have any to sell please let me know. Also looking to rehome 3 golden laced wyandotte roosters

While we were [finally] taking the plastic off the sides of one of the runs tonight my oldest was talking with the toddler and telling him about the "Chickies". Then he commented that THAT one has a puffy cheek! And it's not my ee that has muffs/beard. It's one of my silver laced wyandottes. The whole side of her face looks like it's abcessed. So tonight we either get to do chicken face surgery or put her down. She looks awful. It's the size of a Hershey kiss minus the point. :( she's one of my original group from 2 years ago.

Is she coughing or have a snotty nose? could be sinusitis or MG too.. Do some research on all her symptoms before deciding what to do.

Hope everyone fared the storms passing through. It's going to get cold again soon. We had tornado warnings and decided to pull everyone toward the interior of the building... and of course... DH listened to the wrong weather report so we rode bikes in to work. Luckily it had passed and I had a dry ride home.

She has no other symptoms that I can see. It's kind of scabbed on the side, or muddy. Might look her over better tonight once everyone is roosting and treat tomorrow. Why is is always the wyandottes?

Hi Anetarek, welcome to BYC and the Michigan thread :D

Birds will travel amazing distances. Passing through Green Bay this weekend, I saw small flock of white pelicans  . Come to find out they summer there, and as far north as western Lake Superior
