Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

CS up north looked like a great time for some hearty folks (and chickens). We thought we might have gotten away this weekend, but stayed home and enjoyed Grand Rapids' ArtPrize instead. My parents came over from Warren, and we had a nice day.

Chicken question: Hazel lays very dependably between 9 and 10 am in the nesting box. Alice lays every 36 hours or so in their dirt floored run. She sees Hazel do it, so I thought she might be mentored. Nope.

How can I encourage her to lay in the box?

Amy, I noticed that one of your hens was more dominant than the other. Is the dominant hen using the box? Maybe you need a box in the run area for Hazel? Just a thought. Glad you have 2 laying hens now! I am sure the kids are thrilled!

Which one did you think it was, CG? We think it's Alice (the black one). But she's the one who lays in the run, not the box.
The kids are SO excited to get the eggs! 14 and 15 today!

Thank You NovaAman! I have been following the Michigan thread a lot lately, and had better be public about it. I reside in NW Barry County and have 27 pullets---1 RIR, 9 Barred Rock, 11 WGL, and 7 Buff Orpingtons that need new homes, because we get way too many eggs and the BO's seem to be the biggest eaters (certainly are the biggest anyway).
