Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Mine are like that too! I swear its hit or miss when I get eggs. I have three so sometimes I'll get three eggs, then none, then two, etc.  I think that maybe normal.

Hi I have a Q for all you duck owners. I recently aquired 4 one year old Pekin Ducks, they were with a pekin drake. The first 2 days I got 4 eggs per day, then the next day 1 then 3 the next. One day there was none. Is this normal is they're anything I can help get more eggs. Is it cause they aren't with the drake anymore? My boys won't be mature for at least another month.

Pekins do not necessarily lay every single day... But my bet is that they are hiding their eggs from you!!!

So what is pictured is included? If so, that's not a bad deal IF it is or you can make it, predator proof.

Thank you Meca and Holly. I to wondered if they were hiding or eating them (I didn't know if that was an only a chicken problem) or even if something could be stealing them. Do we have anything around here predator like that would take the eggs without harming the ducks? I have looked all over there day pen which isn't huge but not tiny either, and 75% of it the hubby mows. Then at night they live in a renovated draft horse stall with my 2-3 mo ducklings. Do I need them in fertile adult drake to get eggs? I rake out the whole contents of the stall every other day and haven't found any hidden eggs. And I haven't let them free range with my ducks because there much less human friendly and hard to round up even in the pen. Could feed be any part in there laying? If so what is the best feed for laying ducks?

When it come to learning something is always beneficial, some skills are some you'd rather not have to use. I have had lots of experience at de-skunking dogs. For many years I had Jack Russell Terriers and they are an extremely aggressive hunting breed. They would work as a team to take on coons, wood chucks, possoms, and unfortunately skunks.

I've always used a mixture of peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. I do recommend using a high grease cutting brand to aid in dissolving the oil in skunk spray. I had used tomato juice before learning that it only
prevented me from smeling that horrid stench. Anyone else would immediately smell the skunk essence.

I have one coop and cage that is divided in two. David had placed the broody Welsummer and her three chicks in it. The floor is two 2x4 metal shelves that have a one inch grid. When first placing the newly hatched chicks in the cage I placed a 2x2' square of plastic hardware cloth over it to prevent them from falling through. Earlier this week I decided to removed the center cage divide. Since the chicks were large enough I didn't bother covering with the hardware cloth.

Today when checking the flock I discovered that one of the chicks was missing. I'm pretty sure that she was pulled through the wire by a raccoon. While I could find no evidence, I'd bet money that is what happened.

So tomorrow I will be placing 18 Welsummer eggs in the incubator and hoping for a successful hatch. If anyone needs any Welsummer chicks I may have some in about 3 weeks.

Yeah so my dog got sprayed the night before last and guess what - one of the cats got sprayed last night! And, yes, I've been de-skunking myself, and animals for at least 45 years? I skip the peroxide as it can act as a bleaching agent. My formula is:

1 quart white vinegar
1/4 cup baking soad
2 tsp dish soap

Use it right away rub into the coat and let set about 10 minutes and hose off then follow up with a animal shampoo containg baking soda. Throw away any unused mixture - don't try to save it in a bottle or the bottle will explode.

I've got to find a skunk and de-skunk the area!

posted by the DNR... 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 tsp liquid soap .(DO NOT ADD WATER) it really works!

Avoid applying this mix around the eyes, as it can be very irritating if it drips into the eyes.

The concentration of over-the-counter peroxide is less likely to result in bleaching, and using it makes the product work better.
