Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Heyyy, a Michigander thread! Hello, all! This is my first year with my 'own' flock of chickens (EE's, Partridge Rocks, SC Brown Leghorns) and it's been fun so far. Preparing for snow, already. :( We're taking the pen netting down here in a few weeks.

I feel like the color change is really early this year!

Stacy- So sorry to hear about your little goat. I would be crushed too.

Hello to all the new members, I'm fairly new around here too. Everyone here is fantastic!!

Busy weekend, went to the South Lyon pumpkin festival with my sister and all the kiddos. Today doing some housework, cleaned out the duck house and having my mom over for dinner. Weather this weekend has been fabulous. I wish I had more time to spend outside, but I'm supposed to be studying for a test with any free time I have...

Have a great week everyone!

Hey PurpleEast,

Welcome to the Michigan thread! Glad you could join us! You'll find anything on here from chickens and ducks, making laundry soap, and making ice cream.

It's a great place just to connect to other Michiganders.

Hi purpleeast! I'm new here too. I just got my own first chickens in June so a lot of us are all learning together. There are so many helpful members here - it's a great site. I'm getting ready for winter too. I need to get my run separated so the little ones will have an area outside where my top-hens (the bossy barred rocks  ) can't get to them. They won't be out there for a while yet but I hate digging for posts once the ground freezes.

Gosh, so many newbies!!!

Had a fantastic time with the grand kids on our Halloween week end in Frankenmuth. Tuckered out now...
So sorry, Stacykins on your lil goat. That must have been so hard.

Um... it's still September? Did I forget to change my calender?

I know this isn't chicken related. But my goats are a special part of my little hobby farm. I just lost my beloved bottle baby (seven months old) to bloat last night.

Last night she got frothy bloat. Rushed her to an emergency vet an hour away. She got tubed, her rumen cleaned out, medicated. Got her home. Checked on her continually through the night. She went into shock and collapsed on one of the checks, screaming in pain because the bloating returned with a vengeance. I did CPR on her, the instant she stopped breathing. But I still lost her.

Now I have to tell the breeder that Dulce de Leche is dead. She entrusted me with her precious baby, and I failed. I had her from fourteen days old, and she was my special little girl.

I know I have to go on, for Yoko and Suzie, George and Artie, my remaining goaties. But I am crushed. Destroyed. It feels like when she drew her last breath a piece of my soul was torn out. I know with farm animals, stuff happens. But it still really hurts. My herd is so small, they're all special to me (I have no favorites, my 'favorite' whoever I am giving attention to at the moment). Especially because my goats act more like silly dogs with hooves.
I'm so sorry Stacykins

I know this won't help now but in the future if you ever get another one and it bloats you can buy bloat guard at TSC. With the sheep I always keep a bottle on hand. Not that it always works but most of the time it does. Some other tircks I do is I put a tube in their stomaches to let the gas off, give them crushed up rolaids. Vet told me a long time ago, anything that will make them burp. Old remedy that works really well is 1/4 cup vegetable oil with a teaspoon of ginger mixed in. Again, I am sorry.

Yogi Bear Park in Frankenmuth has three Halloween week ends. Guess never know what the end of Oct's weather would be. We had a beautiful week end weather wise. Lots of Halloween related stuff to do. The campers were all decked out and lots of the adults went all out with costumes and treats! It was really cool!
