Hit garage sales when looking for cast iron cookware. It's amazing how many are sold because they are "too heavy". The very best are made by Griswald, followed by Wagner. Even some with no label can be good but only if the inside is very smooth. I buy any Griswald I encounter, even if they are rusty because the can be brought back to great working order.

... Anyone who has ever cooked in a very old and properly seasoned cast iron pan can attest to the what a joy using one can be......
Indeed I can...... have 4 with various provenance....1 I use every day for eggs.
Rarely cook meat in them tho, most meat is grilled outside year round.

I split the photos of the two bucks I caught on camera and put them together to compare the two. Guys on the hunting site think the larger one is about 3.5 yrs old... the little one is probably 1.5 yrs.

Oh and lookie here! The two on the left might be ours in a few days! Boy and girl from different breeders.

Back on track to go to CA next week... yeah!

LOL!
Pigs to breed I'm guessing? Farmer Boy has the American Guinea Hogs which are a lard pig. I spoke to him about some for next spring. Just recently I saw an ad for Kune Kune pigs. The farm is about 30 minutes from here so I may go look at them. These are a small breed which is what I want. I won't be close to ready for them till spring though. I am leaning towards a docile breed that likes to stay put.

I wish I could use my cast iron pans.

This house came with fuel oil and a glass-top stove. Not compatible with cast iron, especially the kind with the lip on the bottom (which includes all of my set). I'd need either an electric stove or a propane stove (we converted) but I'm not in the position to buy new ovens. But this one is on my wishlist... when I win the lottery that I don't play or inherit my rich parents' estate that doesn't exist.

Another great thing about cooking in cast iron pans is that it naturally adds iron to your diet... especially if you're one that deals with low iron anemia.

@ladyrsanti ... I use my cast iron pan on my glass top electric stove. Hmm... maybe I shouldn't? It's an old stove, so I don't care as much about scratching the surface. Maybe when I buy a new stove I'll care more. When you get that non existent inheritance, let me know. Maybe they'll give us a discount on that awesome looking stove if we bought two. LOL.

Maah, you may have to venture out of Wayland, but, find a Barnes and Noble. They have a few mags that may interest you and the cool part (if you are willing) is you can sit in one of the comfy chairs, sip some hot chocolate, and peruse many, many reads as your time permits. This way you may find one, or two, you like.

LOL. There is a Barnes & Noble right by my work. I stop in there on occasion when I drive into the office & yes, sitting there reading is cool... but I'll have a coffee thanks. I can probably squeeze that in with my trip to the office & monthly Sam's Club quick grab.

My kids think I'm funny... Mom doesn't go anywhere without her coffee, book, & sunglasses. Well of course... because you never know when you're going to have a chance to get in a few paragraphs! Time is limited... I take advantage of it.

So I'm expecting a friend/cousin to visit from Georgia in about a week. He loves to stop over & see the farm (& let me cook for him). So, even though it's getting COLD, I'd better get out there & do a thorough cleaning of the coops & goat stall. Don't need him to think we're slacking in our care & I have no idea how it looks out there. I reckon I have been slacking off a bit. I took advantage of my family's good nature & let them deal with all the farm life for the past month. BUT, knowing my 12 year old son was the last one to clean the coops last weekend means I'm sure it's not "up to par". Anyways, looking forward to him visiting! I think he said he'd be in town for 3 weeks? Plenty of opportunities to cook for him! (& I love to cook & bake. Yip Yip.) I think it's funny... he keeps sending me recipes that he finds & looks good to him. Ha!

I'm cracking up...that is so me (except only coffee if it's early morn). The other day had to get a scrip filled at CVS. Told pharmacist I'd wait. He had a few flu shots to give first & I told him "no worries, I always have a book with me". He asked me how many chapters did I want to read so he knew "how long to make me wait"!!!!

I LOVE my cast iron pans!!! Mine belonged to my Grandmother and sat in my Father's garage for about 30 years. They were a mess and took some serious elbow grease to strip down and re-season, but it was so worth it. I cook my eggs in one every morning.
