Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi, there. It's been a LONG time since I've been on here, and I've forgotten my way around. I'm trying to find out if anyone in MI has any Cayuga ducks and/or Heritage breeds of turkeys for sale. I culled all of my turkey breeders this year, in order to start over, only keeping 4 young Sweetgrass girls, a Lavender girl, a Narragansett girl and a couple of Standard Bronze girls. I need a tom, at least, for Spring breeding. Got out of the Cayuga scene several years ago, and we miss them. Would rather buy from someone local, if possible, instead of ordering through a hatchery. If I'm posting this in the wrong place, would someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks a bunch. :)

what are they eating if you don't mind my asking?

Same thing they've been eating their entire lactation cycle. They get one cup of dumor pellets in the morning and evening. Free choice grass hay, and free choice alfalfa pellets (I'd guess they eat about a cup each, not that much). They'd just be eating alfalfa hay if I'd been able to find some good quality stuff, but I didn't like what I saw when I went hay hunting.

You can literally add water to the milk for your DH, it will make it taste more like store milk. Nice thing about goat milk is its lactose free for all intents and purpose's where those affected with Lactose Intolerance are concerned, also good for people with sensitivity to cows milk or cows milk allergy. i know for myself ifi i eat a bowl of cereal with cows milk it gives me a slight belly ache, same thing with milk and cookies. My niece has Cystic Fibrosis and we try to only give her goat's milk because its a lot easier for her body to digest and healthier all around then cows milk.

Here is a Link on Goats Milk Vs. Cows Milk if anyone cares to read it(Backed up by research)

Silly if you live close enough your welcome to stud my bucks. None are registered but i have a blue eyed nigerian(2yrs Proven), a saanen (10 months), a alpine(2.5yrs Proven), and a nubian(8 months). I have regular LaMancha/Nigerian cross does in my herd and they bag up really nice so milk should be fine for your mini Lamancha/Niger babies.

Goat's milk definitely does have lactose in it. Not much less than milk from cows or sheep, and not enough for someone who is truly lactose intolerant to make a difference. When a person is lactose intolerant, they do not produce any or enough lactase, the enzyme that splits the disaccharide lactose into the monosaccharides galactose and glucose, which the body can then absorb in the small intestine. Those with lactose intolerance run into trouble when that undigested lactose passes through the small intestine, hits the large intestine, and the resident bacteria go to work on all that lovely sugar!

I used to he lactose in tolerant, I was actually diagnosed after rigorous testing. Probably if I'd been born in a less modern era I would've never made out of infancy, since I couldn't even digest human milk as a newborn. Thank goodness for lactose free formula! Thankfully my body ramped up lactase production in later childhood, so I can now enjoy milk from goats, rather than nut, rice, or soy milk.

I took this table (click on it to make it larger and more readable) from the article cited below, which links to a full text version. It compares the lactose composition in milk from goats, sheep, cows, and humans.

YANGILAR, Filiz. "As a Potentially Functional Food: Goats’ Milk and Products." Journal of Food and Nutrition Research 1, no. 4 (2013): 68-81.

A lot of people find goat's milk is more digestible than cow's due to the differing proteins.

I'm glad you posted that. I was going to say something about the lactose - lactase connection but I don't remember my bio-chemistry all that well and I was too lazy to do any research.

On a side note, have you all heard about the Frankenmilk that Coke is producing?

i said goats milk is lactose free for all intents and purposes where LI people are concerned, all 4 of my brothers kids were born lactose intolerant and were able to drink goats, same for my other brothers girlfriend but she is in her early 20s and still LI but CAN drink goats milk with out any bad reactions, same for cheese and butter.

So i guess since i dont know all LI people in the world i should change my statement too.....based on my experience with people i know LI people can drink goats milk and be fine.

My biochemistry is rather fresh! Yay for science!

To get to the sale section...hit the forum button on the top bar of the page...then scroll all the way down til you see the Buy-Sell-Trade forum. Not sure if you will find anyone local but that it would be a good place to check. You can also make your own ad saying what your looking for.

Pretty happy...yesterday realized I was pretty low on ACV & decided to order more from a place I got a good deal last year. Ended up getting (8) 32oz bottles of Bragg ACV with the Mother for $30.02...delivered!
Last year the place had gallons..but only the 32 oz this time. Normally Amazon gets me the best prices...but, this beat their best price by almost 70%!!!

WOW, look at all the goat chat! Silly, that's a big old De Laval. You hit a goldmine. BTW - I think all the boys are smelly when they rut, so, good luck with finding one that ain't. However, being a boy myself, my blue eyed boy never bothered me, but, pretty sure the people at the stores thought I smelled "funny" after loving on him. I'm 100 percent sure my NG doe was bred, but, the toggies may be a different story. Percy did his best but only being 7 months old he was about 100 pounds lighter, and a foot shorter, than those girls. I think it's a sealed deal though because nobody's come back into heat.

Ok, a little chicken talk. A dozen eggs from 2 dozen girls. Not unhappy. The ducks are slowing and that's a problem because I eat duck eggs exclusively!

Nice weather this week.
