Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi Yaklady, welcome back to BYC

Boy the thread is active!

There are different degrees of lactose intolerance - some people can still produce a little of the enzyme Lactase, and can tolerate some milk products - they may be able to eat hard cheeses, yogurt, cottage cheese. Others produce little to none, and tolerate no lactose at all. So you are both right.

Silly, you really need a YAK!

Stacy wish you were closer, I would love to make some goat milk cheese, and maybe soap too.

lol, I thought about yaks...and I have been to YakLadys farm a few times..... I'm just not set up to handle something like that, mostly because they are just cost prohibitive. This is also why we don't have any cattle.

i've only got one girl in milk right now and she is a ND so not a ton of milk, but when more babies drop more will freshen. No clue where you are in the UP but i have family i go visit in Alpena and Rogers City, might still not be close enough though. Could try looking for or posting an ad for herd/milk shares or for raw goat milk for non-human consumption.

No white stuff here....well minimum pretty much 97% or so still green/brown grass and pavement. It's actually 30 degrees out here and sunny, if the wind would just die down it would be down right warm.

Hi all –
Boy it’s been a dogs age since I’ve posted on BYC. Anyway I just finished building a new chicken coop a few weeks back which has a lot more room than my last one. With all the extra space I thought I would add a Roo to the group. Does anyone know of anyone who has a Buff Orpington Roo for sale? I know this is the wrong time of year. I was just hoping I could find an adult Buff now so I could have some fuzzy butts running around this spring. I live in south Central portion of the state. I was even thing about hitting up the Hillsdale Auction this weekend and seeing what was for sale there, but I’m afraid I would be bring home some disease to the rest of the birds. Thanks!

Someone on FB (Michigan list) has some for sale...https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=881002268599805&set=pcb.886529808024087&type=1&theater

At CS2014, the speaker talked about deworming chickens. When am I supposed to do that and how? I thought I read somewhere you're supposed to do it in the Fall/Spring...

No eggs in a full week. Going to have to run to the store for Christmas baking, darnit!

I am loving this mild winter for my first winter with the chickens. 12 more days until solstice!

Turned around & couldn't find these two. Looked up and realized they finally discovered the stairs!

safeguard is a pretty good chicken wormer. You can get it at TSC or, usually cheaper from ebay. Check to make sure, but if you get the liquid 10% (labeled as goat wormer) you can add 3cc/gallon of water and give as their only source of water for 2 days. Wait 14 days and use another kind of wormer. I use ivermectin pour on.

Tap, Like Lisa said. My hens have a distinct sound from the drakes. That's an early sexing trick. Later on the drakes (some) get tail curls. I had a drake that had tail curls one year, none the next year, and had them again this year. Also some breeds develop "male" markings as you already probably know. I have KC and Pekin ducks. The eggs look about the same - large and yummy! I'm not sure about Calls and their particular traits. I do know my ducks are in "winter rest" mode and laying very few now. During the summer I was getting an egg a day from each hen. Also, the drakes seem to lead all ducks around the yard - whereever he goes the hens follow. And, the drakes will sit outside the duck house when the ladies are inside (during the day) doing their thing. I like ducks even though they are quite messy.

Hmm...I have two that have no curls and are very loud but were hatched April 1 and have never laid an egg to my knowledge.

Yak's are so adorable, but I can't imagine owning one!

I have safeguard....its break down is 1.2 cc (ml) per bird for three days straight and then re dose after ten days for another three days....if using in water 2 1/3 tbsp per gallon..and you also half to shake it and then discard it after the day because the solution settles to the bottom

not sure if that breakdown is right tho seems a bit to much
