Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I hope they still have him too & you get your rooster. Of course check him out for lice & mites & all that jazz first... But if you'd like to speed along the "integration period" to make sure the incoming fellow is healthy, you should quarantine him together with a "fodder" chicken from your own flock, for at least 2 weeks. 3 weeks would probably be better... If either of the 2 birds have problems in that time, then you will know there's a mystery disease between the 2 mixing flocks that will cause you problems & you would not want to put them back with your main flock. The problem could be coming from the new rooster, or be in your own flock but not symptomatic so you wouldn't know. If they both do fine, then add them to the rest of the flock.

Thanks again Maah. Keeping them separated for 3 weeks shouldn't be a problem unless the weather really gets cold. The old coop just isn't as warm as new coop. I guess I could just pack in some extra straw, since this is just going to be a short period of time.

Seriously? We just purchased new farm gates this weekend for the goat yard.. and the billy promptly destroyed one last night.

Raz, could you post the info for mtard again? Tomorrow is the last day for comments regarding the bees right?
I love decorating for the holiday.. but after putting up 3 trees and decorating at work.. it's tough to want to do it at home. But last night I put white lights and blue ornaments on my weeping cherry tree (looks like a blue spotted mushroom lol). And got a spot in the living room cleared for the tree. I have dog training for the pup tonight so I won't be doing much else. I think the training and working with her every night for a few min is working. DH told her to sit and she went over to heel and sat.. not in the correct position, but certainly to the right spot.

Are people de-worming because there is an actual worm problem? Or do you worm just because?

I just don't seem to understand treating if there is no problem.
sometimes when I get new birds I see worms in the quarantine pen and then if so I give them to both the free rangers....and the new birds...as for the pheasants...im doing it for a preventative measure before they start laying and I also got a bunch of them from people...the pheasants tho I havnt seen any in there stool however some worms you cannot see....nor the eggs...

i worm year round with an herbal wormer. i use it on the chickens, the duck, the rabbits, the goats, the horses, the guinea pigs, and even the dogs. Also has an added benefit of immune booster namely garlic.

I only have two hens right now; we lost one suddenly and then our other was a rooster we had to get rid of.

I lost my third chicken this year yesterday. My dear OE pullet, Olive

If anyone can help determine the cause of her sudden death, that would be great.

This can be thought of 'humorous'', but all the I have named after a type of food or drink, have died. Cinnamon, Spice, Mocha, Salt, S'mores, Biscuit, Peanut, Muffin Top, and Olive (includes chickens I have one owned who have died). The ones not included in this are Peck and Tiny.

Beautiful! I love Christmas cookies -- almond shortbread are my favorite!

x3! Other threads I've read said you don't have to unless you have a worm problem. I only asked because I remember the speaker saying something at ChickenStock, and I didn't remember when/if to do it for my birds.
