Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I'll be going to Lansing on Monday to reserve the site. Third Sat in June... so that makes it June 20th. I will let you know if that is the final date. The rest is up to you computer nerds. lol I'm lucky I can find BYC!

Holidays are over, so I'm anxious to start planting. I think we're ordering some organic peach and cherry trees (semi-dwarf and dwarf, respectively), but we'll have to store them until the ground thaws. Putting in two more raised beds and taking down five tall fir trees that are simply unsafe around the house. Anyone else have big gardening plans? Someone on FB said TSC had organic seeds out, but I haven't gotten there yet. Went to FFH and they don't have any seeds out -- found some great organic feed though! Who else uses Grahams?

I don't mean to be rude but what do you mean by "organic peach and cherry trees"? And where are they coming from that you would have to store them until thaw? I hate to sound so skeptical but the word "organic" is so overused and commercial nowadays.

If I may suggest a quick solution for your gardening bug just plant some seeds in a shallow tray and wait a week or so for them to sprout and then offer the sprouted tray to your chickens for some fresh green treats.

Of course! No offense taken! I'm either buying from Trees of Antiquity or GrowOrganic, both companies located in California where I'm sure they can plant there right now. ;)

EDIT: We're in the middle of blueberry land, so I'm sure they won't stay "organic" for long because of the wind and pollination, but it's nice to know they're starting out that way.

Sprouts for chickens sounds great! Reminds me of this that I found a few days ago...

Who's taking the ball on CS15? Rose? Reserving the place as usual? Randy? All the associated threads? Let's bring some magic to this bleak time of year! I'll shoot pics again...

I'll do the food thread again. Daron did the swap meet thread last year but since he is a married old man now, he has forgotten us poor chicken people. I forget who lined up the speaker. Was it you Wynette? Do we want to have another featured speaker at CS15? Personally, I think it is a good idea.

So before we all go off half-cocked, what do we want to see from this year's picnic? Post here or PM me with suggestions.

Buy local and you will have much better results. Almost all of our fruit trees are grafts of one sort or another. Hardiness is just one aspect and Cali is a long way from Michigan. The climate and growing conditions are different. That you are located in blueberry land tells me that your soil is unique and as they say, "your results may vary".

I've been using Grahams but I wet it as I find it dusty and don't want to waste any at that price :) I don't like the scratch as it's too dusty. Don't know if other feed companies add oil or something to theirs, but Grahams is almost as dusty as the mash. Hmm..maybe I need to experiment....

I agree about the California fruit trees, especially marginally hardy peaches and cherries. Buy local, or at least from a northern nursery. I gave up on peaches and cherries, as the borers got them right at maturity, so I never got enough fruit to matter. Mary
