Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Sounds like your making progress on the coops. My hubby & I built a coop last year at this time. Freezing your butt off is no fun.
well hope today was well for u Michiganders....here we are getting freezing rain tommarow followed by one to four inches of snow...this should make the building of the coops so much fun....I cant wait..heres an update if your not following my thread....
Coop progress is looking good birdman55. We're suppose to get real cold temps, strong winds & snow the next couple of days grr... We will be starting a silkie coop soon.

@RaZ
Yep, Wynette coordinated the presentation by Dr. Fulton. I would love to have a guest speaker..I thought Dr. F did a fantastic job & gave us tons of good info! Wouldn't mind hearing him again. :D

I'll do the food thread again. Daron did the swap meet thread last year but since he is a married old man now, he has forgotten us poor chicken people. I forget who lined up the speaker. Was it you Wynette? Do we want to have another featured speaker at CS15? Personally, I think it is a good idea.

So before we all go off half-cocked, what do we want to see from this year's picnic? Post here or PM me with suggestions.
I think Wynette did the Attendance and Volunteer Thread which included an introduction about Chicken Stock. The where, why, when, about, and various events. I know you've been doing the food thread with similar instruction. The swap/sell is up for grabs. The raffle has worked out very well with simply you bring an item, get a ticket, win an item. There are always more items than tickets as some people put multiple on the table (which is not needed). Home made items or store bought, and how much you spend is not important. I usually put in my maple syrup. The banner is nice to see on the pavilion. I'm up for the speaker again. Maybe the same doctor from MSU, or someone he recommends? And I guess the best part aside from all of the "official" stuff was seeing you all again and our little after party:)

I'm going to PM a few people and remind them about this MI Thread. People that have been to CS, and may want to jump in again. That's a big part of this also, if you know someone that's been but uses other social media by all means get them on board.

I'll have to see if CS weekend works out this year. Last year we had four events all the same Saturday. It's also a LONG drive for the afternoon.

After last years disaster of a garden I decided I wasn't going to plant one this year. Then for Christmas my dad got us a harrow/quack hog attachment for the tractor. I think it was a hint that he doesn't want to come do it if we have our own tractor. Then DH got me a small tiller for between rows. So the seed catalog is being pulled out. My co-worker puts together a community order so we save up to 10% on the cost. But I only have two weeks to make up my mind.

I started looking at hatchery websites and shouldn't have. I have too many birds right now but there are still a few that I really would like. Also doing some incubating sounds fun but it's still too early. This year (end of February) the incubator is going to the library with me. I get to teach the k-3 graders that visit weekly, about chicks. Nothing like taking your chicken habit to work with you!

Any advise to a newbie who is to inherit a flock with the purchase of a house (just moving back to MI after 10+ years in NY)? Will hopefully close mid Feb. Also, any tricks to getting the dogs used to seeing/hearing chickens? I have a 4 year old Saint and a 2 year old Dane.
welcome A2K love your St. he looks like a short hair, our daughter has one We baby sit when they go away and he comes up every Sun. he does quite well he is about 5 It didn't take to long for him to learn our dog was raised with them ...I think the olderthe dog and the better he listens to commands the easier it is to train

chicken stock 3rd sat. marked on my calendar. Dr. Fulton did a very good job, having a speaker was very nice.
I also am not good with computers, took one to the repair shop a while ago just to find out it had been a sleep.the youngman had it awake and working in min.

Good job on the coop building,

ahhh hope everyone loves the snow we got about three four inches...yea....out in the snow I go to work
just a little snow here, mostly rain

this is the coop my grandson built for me this summer, the truck topper was FREE on the side of the road, the cupboards were from our kitchen several years ago roosts are 2x4s from one side to the other over poop boards, (the top of the cupboard) covered with feed bags nest box is below, they didn't like the drawer but keeping in open makes the area below darker

large run to right is uncovered area to left is covered with tarps and has tarps on 2 1/2 sides to block wind,,, food and water are in the covered area

That's a nice cop, snowflake

Tap, I think everyone's gardens up here were bad, hopefully we will not have 3 such terrible summers in a row. Always room for hope.
IF, you put stock in The Old Farmer's Almanac, then, our spring and summer are supposed to be warm/hot with average precipitation. Sept/Oct warm and rainy. I think it sounds like a good growing season again. I'm going with this outlook. Last year was very wet and even though it may have been an off-year for gardens the new field I planted around my new barn took hold perfectly. Started out like a flood zone but really did the trick. Since I'm further south our garden did ok but could have been better. Wishful thinking for this year!
