Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Better to have your coop, run and brooder already built before you get chicks, then you can spend more time getting to know your new animals instead of being under the gun to get it done cause they grow fast!

Do your research:
Read A LOT in the coop/run construction forum and the predator forum)
Read the space and ventilation article in my signature.

The advanced search function here can help you locate the topics you want to study more easily than just scrolling the forum sections, you'll still have to wade thru a lot of chatter.

Hi all! New to BYC and well, chickens. Hoping my fellow Michiganders can help a girl out!! Any and all advice will be much appreciated. Looking to start my coop out with some egg layers as we eat ALOT of eggs. Wanted to order me some chicks to be delivered by the end of Feb. but not sure if the ground will be thawed enough for the husband to build my coop and run. I'd like them to free range. Again, any and all advice welcome!! Thanks!!

well Im building in the coop/run/construction...just hit the below link in blue and you can see some of the coops that I have built and are building...and as for chickens...depending where you are located you can come over by me in the central part of Michigan and we can get great deals...for chickens..as many as you want

Right now (for the cold nights) I have my five lavender Amerucana chicks in (in a cat carrier) and my Amerucana rooster - he was so cold last time his comb turned blue and he lost a lot of weight, so he's in for the duration of the cold nights. Lucky he's quiet. I want to use him for breeding so he's getting special treatment. One good thing is I got him feral (you should have seen the bite mark he gave me) and after the last few nights, when I go out to the run, he runs between my legs and hangs out. I really think part of what's going on is he's low man and not getting enough food, too.

I'm looking for advice, as I've not experienced this before. I have a hen who is about 6 months old. 2 days ago while I was in the coop, I noticed that she fell forward onto her neck, head and had difficulty righting herself. I have her inside now and she is still doing this although NOT all of the time. She's also having tremors in her neck and tilts to the left. I have given her ensure, poultry drench, and vet rx....suggestions or experience are welcome!

Sounds like mareks, wry neck, or something has her bad... wry neck is just the neck/ balance. Mareks can be anywhere but doing the splits is most common. Other things that can weaken and lose weight is worms, mites, and impacted/ sour crop.
