Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I got my first deer of the season! I was wearing a dress and my craft apron because I had been sewing earlier. Someday I will have a chance to wear all my big $$$ camo gear when I'm not tag-teaming mommy & deerhunter. I love getting all our own meat - I think it stems from the same reason we keep the chickens for eggs, other than their being adorable.

Sarah, congratulations of the deer. While I have been seeing deer in the yard on a regular basis I'm going to ha to wait until gun season opens. A re-injury of an old shoulder problem prevents me from being ableto pull my bow back.

The coffee is on and there is a chocolate cake sitting on the counter so come on in and help yourself. We can sit here and watch the temperature continue to fall as sunrise approaches. Looks as though it is going to be the coldest it's been since last March.

I think that I will probably trim the trumpet vine back today so that I can install a plastic tarp of the top of the run. Even though I a not ready for winter to come I doubt that I can do anything to prevent its arrival.

Congrats on the deer!!

shoot... ever since the early doe season, I've not seen hardly any deer. Hopefully I'll have better luck this year, last year was bad though I held out and took a fawn last day of late doe... I really tried to hold out for an older deer, but saw zero other than the same fawn (and I only took her cause the freezer was void of venison)! I've taken a few deer in street clothes... but never a dress!.... socks once in the snow.... but then again, it's rare that you'll ever see me in a dress anyway.

See I'm not THAT weird!

That was me! I was interested. I pass by that way sometimes and their sign catches my eye, with the different colored eggs and of course "organic". They look like serious chicken people and I figured someone on here must know them or even BE them :)
Thier names are Brain and Jenna, if I am placing their farm correctly, they are wonderful people, you can tell them Suzanne and Todd told you who they were, we have a long lovely history together :)

We worked really hard on the coop this weekend painting the inside, making a space for the babies, once they are weaned off the heat lamp, getting nest boxes situated and re organizing everything.

Since we got a few more hens, they have all been laying everywhere but the nesting boxes, and they used to really like them? IDK what is up with that, but I am just glad they are laying, now the day I get more than 3 in one day I will be so excited, it's amazing how few times I have even had a dozen eggs on hand, since I use them in cooking and baking, They just never add up to enough to make the family scrambled eggs, I need about 15 for that :)

I can't give you specifics cause I live in the thumb. But generally speaking you pay 3-$6 more per 100 buying in 50 pound bags than you will if you bought 100 # bags. Is there a grain elevator near you? Call around. Many farmers now have their own grain mixing setups and I buy my grain from a farmer. Try an ad on craig's list. Good luck.
Sarah, there is a grain elevator here in Cedar Springs, you can call them and see what they have.

Trefoil, I know you aren't Sarah, but I couldn't find her original post with the question in it :)

But thanks for the heads up, I will start buying them in 100# bags, I am all for saving a few bucks

You are able to use a crossbow, now, legally. Would that be easier?

It's going to be interesting this gun season out at the family's.
We had trespassers out back on what was then vacant property last year, they kept claiming the old owner gave permission............Now there is a new owner. We warned him, because he hunts too. Across the street is state land, which is rented out by the week but there are always those who don't understand you have to pay now, and only one at a time...................And down the way, my friend's property is fringing on more state, and the public access has been blocked by the new neighbor, who's property t's up with it. I don't know the rate the state/ county charge to hunt that land, but i know i'd be p.o'd if i payed and some guy blocked the road!

I'm always a little nervous for DH, especially that first day! Too many trespassers, bullets going all directions because people don't know where each other are.........

Well it is a Merrell dress that is meant for hiking and being outdoorsy so nothing fancy. I'm wearing another Merrell dress right now with leggings that basically looks like a long flannel shirt with a tie at the waist. Very cozy in this chilly weather!

I love this apron I got on Etsy though, perfect for toting my ipod around in the pockets and keeping the wool dust off me when I am sewing things with my recycled sweaters. I do feel silly when I forget and answer the door in it though. One day I was playing dressup with my 4 year old, and I put on a ridiculous white cafe waitress apron with ruffles and sequins and answered the door to talk to our soon-to-be neighbor about letting them put a power line through our property. I felt so embarassed when he left and I realized I was wearing the thing.
