I remember reading about a group of folks who were trying to set up a new town at some place called Plymouth Rock. Seem rather foolhardy to me.

Cuteness Alert! Momma Broody is so good she lets my December chicks (not hers) sleep under her...well, as much as they can fit. The two in the front are ones she hatched, the two on the sides are incubator babies :)

LOVE a good momma, she is precious, I have a NH that is still sleeping with the chicks she hatched last yr. she did not however accept orphans, so yours is very special
Hello, I am up here in Sault ste. Marie Michigan. I am in the process of building a chicken coup and run, and expecting our first chickens in the mail by May. Been snooping around this site for information and expertise in raising Chickens, and wanted to stop in and say hello. :)
HI, and welcome to Mi. BYC

good luck with your peeps, lots of help here just ask and lots of help on the forum for baby chicks

Hi everyone. Been MIA from the site for awhile, been super busy trying to get the yard cleaned up (even in this frozen crap) Got my coop almost built, decided to go with pullets instead of chicks. My question to all of you is, while it is still chilly out and chillier at night, should I put a heat lamp in the coop? Or am I not reading something right that pullets can survive outside without heat?? All help is greatly appreciated!!

Hello & welcome. If you brood in the house or its reliably warm outside you can use a regular bulb instead of a heat lamp for them. Just check to make sure it can keep the correct temps.

.
Actually some regular bulbs are coated with Teflon which is toxic to birds - it helps make them less likely to shatter. Check at TSC or a local pet store, they probably have bird-safe lights. I prefer a dark heat bulb like those used for reptiles, it allows them to have more natural day/night cycles. And I REALLY like my Premier heat plate - and so do the chicks.

It depends on how old your birds will be, and if they are acclimated to cold weather. They should be at least 6 weeks old and fully feathered out, and given a chance to get used to variable temps, before going without heat. We can still expect cold enough to be a problem for young/smaller birds, and you run the risk of them piling up and smothering each other if they get too cold.

Howdy....some of you know me. Some of you won't. I don't get on here much anymore.

Looking to get some baby Quail this year but don't want to have to drive clear to Detroit or Lansing....anybody closer to Saginaw??

Sorry @ChicwannaB I just ordered some from Shelbyville. He will ship if you want. I am picking mine up though. I'm not any closer though. I am getting mine from West Michigan Game Birds. He was actually the only one to reply to me. I am sending them to the kids' school to hatch after spring break. If you want some in May or June, let me know and maybe we can make arrangements to meet up half way with some of mine if we have a good hatch. I won't need all of them. We have .7 acres inside a township. So we can only have so many. ;-) It will give me an excuse to camp a little further from home.

I need to start making some pens this weekend for the quail. Trying to figure out how something nice that will work with my limited skills but not be an eye sore. We pretty much live outside in warmer months.

@Opa That is an impressive egg.

Anyone know where to get Cornish cross hatching eggs? Townline says they do not offer them. :-/ I wanted to send some to the kids' school (I have 3 in school, so 3 classes to send an incubator to) but don't want a bunch of egg layers since this year we are working on meat birds for the freezer. If needed I will get some easter eggers and have too many of those. I would just rather hatch what we want.

Hey Welcome TreeTree411. You have been snooping around the right place because this site is loaded with excellent info.

Thanks, I just called on them and turns out they are 6 days old, so will I still need a brooder for them? I was totally preparing for older pullets that I could just put in the coop but now I have to change gears and focus on either getting the 6 day olds or day old chicks. Crap.
