Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Actually some regular bulbs are coated with Teflon which is toxic to birds - it helps make them less likely to shatter. Check at TSC or a local pet store, they probably have bird-safe lights. I prefer a dark heat bulb like those used for reptiles, it allows them to have more natural day/night cycles. And I REALLY like my Premier heat plate - and so do the chicks.

That's a good point that can't be repeated too often for the newbies.

Thanks, I just called on them and turns out they are 6 days old, so will I still need a brooder for them? I was totally preparing for older pullets that I could just put in the coop but now I have to change gears and focus on either getting the 6 day olds or day old chicks. Crap.
yes you will need a brooder of sorts, you can still keep them outside as long as you have a good draft free area, round corners helps to keep them from pilling in a corner and suffocating. and you will need a dependable heat lamp. good luck

I think I am good to go. I got the starter pack/kit from the hatchery and it came with a red bulb/ heat lamp.

Cuteness Alert! Momma Broody is so good she lets my December chicks (not hers) sleep under her...well, as much as they can fit. The two in the front are ones she hatched, the two on the sides are incubator babies :)

Love pictures like that!

If anyone is interested, I have some Jill Rees Cream Legbar roosters, pairs, hatching eggs, and chicks available in Southwest Michigan. Here are pictures of some of them. Sorry about the lighting (it's harder to take pictures of chickens than you might think.

Handsome birds! I managed to get photos of the birds I'm looking to move on; too many roosters! They are all nice polite boys, and the Wyandotte is vaccinated for Marek's. I'm in Perry, and work in Novi, and can travel a bit if needed.

They are gorgeous! I wish I needed a rooster...and could have one...but I can't. City says no and hubby says he'll eat it if I bring one home once we're out in the hills. Maybe someday!

We also have too many roosters that no one wants. somewhere in the forum it was mentioned that there was a rooster sanctuary in Michigan that takes in roosters (I don't want mine to end up in the stew pot), does anyone know where it is?
