Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I see the state has now quarantined all poultry. What exactly does this mean? It was a very vague couple of sentences. The reason I ask is the verbiage has changed since yesterday and I'm curious what other things are included in an official quarintine.

Where did you see that....got a link?

They shut down any swaps meets fairs.

Funny how MDARD is targeting 4-H, fairs, swaps and backyard flocks with this scare tactic. Thus far no incidence of avian influenza has occurred in Michigan. Ai has hit commercial operations that supposedly have little exposure to outside migratory birds but other vectors haven't been explored.

The closest backyard flock was in Indiana. That flock was 1 of over 4000 flocks tested and the AI strain was different than what has decimated the commercial flocks.

So the options are to listen to Chicken Little that the sky is falling and hide. Or go on with living life the best you can.

First field trip to the coop. They seem to like it

Anyone get chicks, meaties or layers, from Townline 4 weeks ago that are failing to thrive?

I got mine about 4 weeks ago from Townline (4 red cross, 2 barred rock and 2 bsl, although I'm thinking I have 3 bsl and 1 barred rock) and they are doing great. Wanting out of the brooder, need to finish up the coop first ;)

Aart - I found it through the Michigan small farms council. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdard/Poultry_Quarantine_Final_1_490684_7.pdf?20150602144903

I just find it highly annoying that they keep sending mixed messages. We know chickens and what the dangers are but the general public is (sorry) rather stupid and will believe anything they are told about chickens and the "danger". I don't have tv so I don't know what hype the media is doing but the state has likely just made an impact on how 4-h kids will view AI now and in the future. A lot of good bio security teaching has been tossed aside for fear.

:/sorry for rant!
