Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey...this looks like a wedding photo

Did I miss the wedding at CS?

Happy to be up on the northern portion of the "enhanced risk" area today. I made the kids come out and help me pick up everything in the yard that could get blown around or away in the storm. Got all of the chicks into their coop and locked in; the big girls are stubborn and won't come inside the coops this morning so i'll have to run out there once the rain starts and they get smart enough to go inside. *sigh* The good thing is that i got the front porch almost entirely cleaned off, which has needed done for about a month now. It was still littered with 4-cell packs and empty flats, empty yogurt containers and milkjugs from my winter sowing. Making the dogs stay outside all morning since it looks like they will have to be inside all afternoon....

Looks like lots of fun was had a CS! Hope you all had a great time.

On a gardening note.....i've never grown beets before and would like to this year. I can do a "fall" crop of beets, correct? Plant in the end of July? I need to get my strawberries out of the garden and into a raised bed to have a space to grow anything more than i already have planted and I'm not moving the strawberry plants until they are done fruiting (IF they fruit this year? i'm not seeing any white berries yet and am wondering if maybe they got frosted.....)

WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF NICE STRAWBERRYS THIS YEAR.MINE ARE EVER BLOOMING THOUGH AND I THINK THE OTHERS ARE BETTER. BET A BIG CROP ALL AT ONCE. WE STILL GO TO A FARM TO PICK FOR THE FREEZER. MY BERRYS TAKE UP TO MUCH ROOM AND I NEED TO ROTOTILL BETWEEN THE ROWS, .....SO THERE ARE ROWS.

GOOD PICS JOHN, AS ALWAYS, YOU DID A GOOD JOB!!

HOPE NO ONE WAS IN THE AREA'S HIT BY THE WINDS AND TORNADO, WE HAD NO DAMAGE JUST A LOT OF RAIN. GRAND DAUGHTERS AND I GOT OUT TO PICK STRAWBERRYS BEFORE THE STORM HIT,HOPE TO GET BACK TOMORROW FOR SOME MORE BEFORE I TAKE THEM HOME

so in an amazing twist of events, Chicken B was returned to me last night. I picked him up from someone in the area he went missing. The poor guy was looking real rough. After getting him some food and water he perked back up. I've been keeping him inside for now because he seems to be favoring one leg over the other, so I don't want him hurting himself worse.

Carpeting in a boat is about as stupid an idea as is carpet on the floor of pickup trucks. Both are quick to get dirty and difficult to clean.

I recently sold my old river boat and decided to take the proceeds and have the side console removed from my river jet boat and replaced with a front console. To keep the cost down I decided to do as much as possible to get it ready for the boat builder. This entailed removing the existing controls, the side console, and all the carpeting,

Taking the carpet off was easy, but the adhesive is a different story. The entire interior of the boat had a thick layer about the consistency of cement. Twenty hours of scraping, and wire brushing and I'm about 80% done. I concentrated on the areas affected by the change so if I don't finish tomorrow it can wait until the modifications are done.

Went to the farm today to mow. I took a thermos of coffee and stopped for donuts. My old farmer was thrilled. He makes coffee, drinks one cup then microwaves the remained until it's gone. This morning when he took his cup of coffee from the microwave he found it to be as cold as when he put it in. Being to cheap to make a fresh pot he made do with it cold.

As soon as I was done mowing I had intended to head home to continue working on the boat. However, my old friend was waiting with a plateful of raw chicken and wanting me to cook it on the grill for our lunch. So a nice visit and two hours later I told him that I'd be back Friday an bring a new microwave.

About 6pm Hope called me to inform me that her son and daughter in law called her to say they were running late. After telling me not to wait supper for her she asked about my day. I told her about Marvin drinking cold coffee and that I was taking him a new microwave on Friday.

She suggested strongly that as soon as I had Granny fed I should go buy a microwave; that making a old man wait that long was cruel

As Marvin opened the door for me he grinned and said "wow, short week".

Raised areas that are about 3" wide running helter skelter with occasional piles of dirt 6" high and 12" in diameter are indicative of mole infestation. Gophers (ground squirrels) create tunnels that are smaller than those made by moles.

Woodchucks burrow under fences to forage in gardens, and under buildings to create dens. Obviously, due to their larger size their tunnels often are 12" in diameter. They typically run about 3' under ground although I have found them as deep as 6' and often extending 30-40'. While the excess dirt a mole can't push though winds up being the lawn mangling mounds we all detest, the excavated dirt from the woodchucks efforts are deposited outside the burrow entrance in a long scree.

This morning I checked the trap I set last night, at the spot the woodchuck had gone under my chicken coop ,and found that it was empty. I then spent several hours with my old farmer friend so when I returned home I checked again. This time a large female woodchuck had met her fate. Evidently she had slept late and exiting directly into the waiting trap ended her morning.

Both Hope and Granny have retired for the night and they left the TV on. I'm glad that it Is still on. It can be an exceptionally informative and educational tool. For instance, I just learned that insurance ducks will nest on top of a woman's head. I saw it, so It must be true.
hahahahahahahaha!!!!! Insurance ducks nest on top of a woman's head. Definitely a true story; I saw it too.
