Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Back home from da Yooperland. Had quite an adventure up at Tahquamenon Falls. We started at the lower falls and opted to hike up the trail to the upper falls instead of driving up to the falls. Its only 4 miles the sign said. The sign also said that the trail conditions were primitive. Meaning you should really have on some hiking boots and perhaps a trekking pole along with plenty of water. I'm going to be hearing about that for a while.

FUN! I have never been, but I am going to Pictured Rocks next week. Everyone has been talking about how choppy the water is by there, and it's making me a little nervous.

Plant in October or November.
Harvest in July...I just pulled mine last week.

Beautiful harvest!

It was a little gross, and I was worried I would hurt her, but she didn't make a peep and it only bled for a minute. I put lots of neosporin on it tonight and am letting her sleep in a coop next to the big girl's. I'll see how she does with everyone in the morning. But the make-shift separation pen is right by the other girls in case they do start to peck.

She was completely out of the run when I found her like that. My little ones have been jumping over the 4 foot fence all summer, and I think she might've tore it jumping out? I've never seen aggressive between my five other than normal pecking order things.

Actually, we're kicking around the idea of doing Picture Rocks sometime in the future, like next summer perhaps.

Oh good....wondered about the pain reaction and bleeding.
Good to know in case I need it in the future, thanks for sharing the experience.

Who knows how it happened, could have been another bird or the fence.
Hopefully you can get her fully back in with the other birds right off, good to have a separation pen ready tho.

I have one of my easter eggers who will not lay in the nest boxes. I keep finding green eggs sitting in the coop. I think that little bugger has been laying out in the yard too.

Run is framed, mostly painted, and I've rigged in a door. Off to get welded wire to put around it and BAM, she's done

I've found a couple eggs in the run. We don't have access to the run directly so I have to get in the coop and use-of all things-the poop scooping rake, which you can rotate with a flick of the wrist, it becomes an egg cradling device. And those eggs are separated by a layer of paper towel.

We read that it is wise to let the hens out after noon time because most of them are done laying by then. Our girls learn from one another about using the nest box and most want the same box another is using. They either will cram in the one or squawk at the sitting hen until they leave. It's crazy!

We have been lucky with this process of waiting until afternoon to allow the girls out free range. Very rarely do I find eggs in the run and usually by young pullets just starting to lay.

I do have a couple EE hens that seem to be afternoon layers though and they panic when they can't get back in (they have no direct access to the pole barn coop after let out to free range). At least they pace back and forth near the pole barn door and we let the couple of girls that are off schedule in so they are happy :). So far, not finding any that wish to start a nest outside that we know of!

I've been gone camping for the past week plus. I was happy to see it was under 200 posts to catch up on. I spent one afternoon driving over to Empire to pick up some birds. I also ran my first 5k that I've been training for since May. I survived although I was slow! I have pictures to share more than anything.

This is how overgrown my run. Is this year. The chickens didn't want to use it until it was tall enough for shade.
