I was having a similar conversation...... we are doing this to ourselves. We should probably all just stop hunting for 2-3 years and that would have a dramatic difference. At least the insurance company's are happy.

We got about 4 inches so far. Snow banged off chicken run, had to add a couple wire reinforcements, and mickeymoused small shed roof cleared off (yay roof rake!). Wet snow on warm ground, SHM, glad I don't have to drive anywhere today....hope the power lines hold up

aart, what do you use to knock the snow off your Aviary nets? This will be our first year with one up & I'm curious to see how it will hold up to our Michigan winters.

It's not aviary netting but 14ga 2x4 welded wire and I just bang on it from underneath with the back of a snow shovel and sometimes scrape at it with the business edge of the snow shovel. Snow usually doesn't stick unless it's warm wet snow or freezing rain falls before the snow. I imagine that the rustier the fencing gets over time, the more likely for snow to stick, but it's only 2 years old ans till in great shape.

I have heavy duty poultry netting and do the same thing - 4 years and it is still in great shape.

Depending on the light, Uncle John's KC ducks appear to show different colours on their heads. Seems like green in this shot.



Zoom out a bit and they look brown here.


But don't ask me. I can't even begin to describe the various colours of any poultry. Who knew cuckoo was a colour?

No further news on any surgery. Neither doctor has responded to my questions.

Thank aart, I know I will have to be very diligent about knocking the snow off the net. I'm just praying that it will at least last a couple of seasons.

I use aviary netting and came home today with it wet and heavy touching the ground in my run. It held up and never broke, but the weight of the snow on it bent one of my dog panels and somewhat caved in.
I use either a big leaf rake or big plastic grain shovel to smack snow off the netting. It works really good and dose not damage the netting.
When it warms up in a few days, ill reinforce my panels and add one more post to hold up the netting.
